February 12 Declared Public Holiday For Guru Ravidas Jayanti

Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana to honor the revered saint's birth anniversary with public observances.

The birth anniversary of Guru Ravidas, celebrated every year on Magh Purnima, will be marked by public holidays across major Indian states, most significantly on February 12, 2025. The Delhi government has declared this date as a public holiday to honor the revered figure known for his contributions to social equality and the Bhakti movement.

According to notifications from the General Administration Department, the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, VK Saxena, is pleased to announce Wednesday, February 12, 2025, as a holiday for all government offices, autonomous bodies, and public sector undertakings across the National Capital Territory of Delhi on account of Guru Ravidas Jayanti. This declaration follows the cancellation of the previously scheduled restricted holiday announced last November.

Similar public holidays will be observed in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, impacting the operation of schools and government institutions. Such decisions reflect growing recognition of the societal impact of Guru Ravidas’s teachings, which have inspired millions throughout history.

Schools under the Delhi government will be closed on this day, allowing students to engage with their cultural heritage. Though the status of private schools and educational facilities has yet to be officially confirmed, it is anticipated many will follow suit.

Guru Ravidas, born in Varanasi during the 15th century, is celebrated not just as a saint but as a social reformer who staunchly opposed caste discrimination and preached for equality among various social strata. His teachings, which emphasized simplicity, humility, and devotion to God, resonate strongly with modern values of inclusivity and acceptance, making his legacy all the more relevant today.

His followers, known as Ravidassia, conduct elaborate celebrations on Guru Ravidas Jayanti, which often include religious processions, devotional singing, and community feasts. The occasion is not only about observing his birth but also about celebrating his commitment to equality and justice. His hymns, which are part of the Guru Granth Sahib, the sacred text of Sikhism, reinforce the principles he advocated during his lifetime.

Regarding banking operations, certain states including Delhi, Punjab, and Haryana will observe holidays, and banks will remain closed. Customers are advised to plan their banking activities accordingly. Essential services, such as healthcare and emergency response, will continue to remain operational.

Local governments encourage all residents to participate actively in the celebrations, reflecting on Guru Ravidas's teachings of love, equality, and community. The occasion serves as both a cultural and social reminder of the values he espoused, prompting communities to come together and celebrate diversity.

On this Guru Ravidas Jayanti, as public institutions close their doors, the spirit of unity can be seen alive through communal celebrations across northern India. The significance of the day extends beyond mere holiday announcements; it’s about embodying the essence of social harmony Guru Ravidas dedicated his life to achieve. From Government offices to household celebrations, his teachings continue to inspire generations and reinforce the hope for equity and justice within society.
