Father John Misty Debuts New Song On Colbert

The singer-songwriter performs "The Dead Mouse One" solo during his Late Show appearance.

Father John Misty took to The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on February 28, 2025, to perform his unreleased track, "The Dead Mouse One," marking the song's television debut. This performance followed the song's initial live debut, which took place over a year earlier at the Sunset Cultural Center on December 15, 2023. Misty, whose real name is Josh Tillman, showcased his remarkable musicality with just his acoustic guitar, delivering a heartfelt and poignant rendition.

Much like his previous performances, this latest one offered viewers a glimpse of the raw emotion and storytelling ability characteristic of Tillman's work. The lyrics of "The Dead Mouse One" narrate the tale of the titular mouse, depicted with affection and sadness. "A stupid little heartbreak/ I knew you for a day/ Brought you a little water/ and called you by name/ and hoped you were only trembling because you were lost and so afraid," he sang, capturing the fleeting connection made with the small creature.

The performance continued with Tillman's ability to blend humor and tragedy, as he recounted the little funeral he arranged for the mouse. "A silly little service/ Under the acacia tree/ Two handfuls of dirt, I sang this melody/ Then went back to my little life/ Ignoring human tragedy," he reflected. This poignant closing line encapsulated the bittersweet nature of the song, leaving viewers with much to ponder.

This heartfelt performance was not just reminiscent of Misty’s prior appearances but also showcased his growth as both an artist and storyteller. He last entertained the audience of The Late Show back in 2016, where he performed "Holy Shit" from his album, I Love You, Honeybear. Now, after almost a decade, he returned to share this deeply personal piece.

Currently, Father John Misty is on tour to promote his latest album, Mahashmashana, which was released on November 22, 2024. Critics have celebrated the album, and it has been featured prominently on multiple year-end lists. Single releases from the album, such as "Screamland" and "I Guess Time Just Makes Fools of Us All," have made waves, solidifying Misty’s place within the contemporary music scene.

Following his performance on Colbert, Misty is poised to continue his musical sojourn across North America, wrapping up this leg of the tour with upcoming performances from Philadelphia to Washington D.C. before heading abroad. This summer, he will hit the road again, with notable openers including Lucinda Williams and Hamilton Leithauser.

Misty's dedication to his craft is complemented by ventures such as his recent release of I Love You, Honeybear Demos, etc., featuring material recorded during the early creative process of his acclaimed 2015 album. This collection grants fans access to the raw and unfiltered development of Misty's music and lyrics.

Those who missed the performance can find it online to experience the depth of Misty’s artistry. The emotional resonance of "The Dead Mouse One" reflects the complex layers of his songwriting, demonstrating his ability to connect with listeners on both whimsical and serious levels.

Father John Misty's continued exploration of themes relating to human emotions, love, loss, and introspection make his music increasingly relevant. With each performance, he invites his audience to reflect on the small tragedies of life and the connections we forge, no matter how brief.

Fans can catch him next on tour as he embarks on various stops worldwide. Whether it's solo performances or collaborative shows, Tillman's artistry promises to deliver heartfelt experiences each time.
