CSKA Moscow Continues Winning Streak Against UNICS Kazan

Defending champions secure 97-86 home victory to maintain league leadership.

On March 1, 2025, CSKA Moscow cemented its dominance over UNICS Kazan, securing a convincing 97-86 victory at their home court. This win marked the third consecutive triumph for CSKA against UNICS this season, keeping them firmly at the top of the VTB United League standings.

The match, described as the ‘classic of Russian basketball,’ began with both teams struggling to find their rhythm. For nearly three minutes, neither side could find the bottom of the net, reflecting the intense defensive battle. Eventually, it was Nikita Kurbanov who broke the deadlock for CSKA, followed closely by Amat Mbaye, who executed a smooth layup. By the end of the first quarter, the teams faltered offensively, with CSKA narrowly leading 21-12.

During the second quarter, Ivan Ukhov sparked CSKA’s offense, propelling them to their first double-digit lead at 25-12 after two sweeping drives to the basket.
Although UNICS attempted to claw back with Jalen Reynolds, whose contributions included 15 points by halftime, the aggressive rebounding and patient execution from CSKA proved too much. The team collected nine offensive rebounds against UNICS’s mere two,
much to the frustration of UNICS coach Velimir Perasovic, who was seen urging his players during timeouts to focus on defensive rebounds.

By halftime, CSKA maintained an eight-point lead at 43-35. The third quarter saw UNICS attempt to mount another comeback, especially with Reynolds making early contributions to reduce the deficit. Yet, CSKA regained control through the combined efforts of Mbaye and Trimble, who facilitated key baskets and pushed the lead back to ten points at 52-42.

A notable aspect of the game was CSKA's assertiveness under the basket. The team finished with 21 offensive rebounds, setting a season record and showcasing their commanding presence inside. This rebounding prowess allowed CSKA to control the flow of the game and minimize UNICS’s scoring opportunities.

Velimir Perasovic commented on his team's struggles, stating, "When you allow the opponent to get 21 offensive rebounds, it’s nearly impossible to win. CSKA showed desire, physical power, and persistence from the start." His sentiments acknowledged the strengths displayed by CSKA and the failures of his own team to capitalize on scoring opportunities.

Entering the final quarter, both teams elevated their offensive intensity. Mellow Trimble shone brightly, hitting several three-pointers and keeping CSKA at bay. A highlight was when Aleksa Avramovic executed a no-look pass to Mbaye, who finished the play with flair, electrifying the home crowd.

UNICS, though they had commendable efforts from DeVon Akun-Purcell and Reynolds, struggled to maintain consistent scoring, particularly as Reynolds faded offensively during the latter stages. "We made too many mistakes. Any time we managed to reduce the deficit to five points, we would lose possession," Perasovic lamented after the game, reitering the need for greater discipline among his players.

With the game closing out, CSKA's defense held firm, ensuring they never relinquished their lead. The final score reflected CSKA’s thorough performance, dominating not just on points but highlighting their physical play and rebounding advantage throughout the match.

Head Coach Andreas Pistiolis celebrated the team's chemistry and resilience: "Key was the start of the match, which we played very well. We knew UNICS always starts strong and tough, and we responded with our toughness and aggression. We controlled the game throughout, but with such opponents, there’s always an element of danger. Yet we executed well and earned what we deserved."

This victory positions CSKA as the formidable force within the league, compiling their third win this season over UNICS and solidifying their top position with the next challenge set against Uralmash on March 4. For UNICS, the path remains treacherous, with their next matchup against MBA-MAI requiring significant improvement to avert another loss.
