FAA Orders Urgent Boeing 787 Inspections After Flight Scare

Mid-air incidents prompt inspections of hundreds of Dreamliners amid safety concerns

FAA Orders Urgent Boeing 787 Inspections After Flight Scare

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has mandated immediate inspections of Boeing 787 Dreamliners following serious safety concerns linked to mid-air incidents involving the aircraft. This directive was issued after one LATAM Airlines flight experienced a frightening descent, injuring over 50 passengers on board.

On March 11, LATAM Flight 800, which was traveling from Sydney to Santiago, Chile, reportedly plummeted approximately 400 feet, creating panic among passengers and crew. The sudden drop was caused by "uncommanded horizontal movement" of the pilot seats, which resulted in the autopilot being disengaged.

Preliminary investigations indicated the issue stemmed from the pilot's seat latch being accidentally removed by cabin crew. This led to the unexpected movement of the seat, pushing the control stick forward without command, causing the aircraft to descend rapidly.

The LATAM flight had to make an emergency landing in Auckland, New Zealand, to address the injuries sustained by passengers. Fortunately, all injured individuals received medical attention, but the seriousness of the incident raised immediate alarm within aviation authorities.

According to the FAA, the airworthiness directive targets 158 U.S.-registered Boeing 787 airplanes along with 737 Dreamliners worldwide, which could also be affected by similar issues. Operators are required to inspect the impacted aircraft for cracked or missing rocker switch covers within 30 days.

Failure to resolve these issues could result in significant safety risks. The FAA noted, “Uncommanded horizontal movement of an occupied seat can cause in-flight upset from unintended and abrupt flight control inputs, leading to potential rapid descents.”

Boeing confirmed they fully support the FAA’s directive, stating it aligns with their existing safety protocols. The company emphasized proactive compliance to avoid any reoccurrence of safety threats associated with their planes.

These inspections are part of larger scrutiny surrounding Boeing's 787 models, which have faced previous challenges. This is not the first time the FAA has intervened; earlier this year, they launched investigations following multiple reports of similar incidents involving random movements of pilot seats.

Flight regulators worldwide are increasingly focused on Boeing’s track record, particularly since the company has faced criminal investigations and scrutiny over past safety failures. Boeing is still recovering from the fallout of the 737 Max crashes, which brought intensified public and regulatory attention to their safety practices.

Industry experts express concerns about the impact of these safety inspections on airlines. They note inspections and modifications can lead to operational delays and increased maintenance costs, but safety remains the top priority.

This recent directive adds pressure to Boeing, whose reputation could take another hit if more incidents are revealed. Shareholders and airline operators alike will be watching the developments closely as Boeing continues to navigate through heightened regulations.

Passengers flying on Boeing 787s can remain cautiously optimistic, knowing the FAA is actively monitoring flight safety and demanding compliance from airlines. With the implementation of these inspections, the hope is to restore confidence and mitigate risks associated with aircraft safety.

Overall, the FAA's recent order clearly reflects the aviation industry's commitment to stringent safety practices. Both the agency and Boeing appear intent on ensuring the safety of passengers and crew members flying the skies on their aircraft.
