Ethel Kennedy Remembered By Presidents And Family

A memorial service held for Ethel Kennedy showcased tributes from presidents, family, and friends celebrating her enduring legacy

Current and former presidents gathered to honor Ethel Kennedy, who passed away at the age of 96 due to complications from a stroke. A memorial was held on October 16 at the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle, bringing together notable figures, family, and friends to celebrate her life and legacy.

President Joe Biden delivered the eulogy, reflecting on Ethel's lifelong commitment to civil rights and humanitarian efforts, saying, "We saw how she picked up Bobby's cause and stamped her own mark on the country. We're abetter nation and abetter world because of Ethel Kennedy." Former Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama also shared their remembrances, highlighting her unwavering dedication to social causes.

Obama acknowledged Ethel's seriousness about righting wrongs but emphasized her fun-loving spirit. "She never seemed to take herself too seriously," he remarked, which perfectly encapsulated her approach to life and activism. Ethel, the widow of Robert F. Kennedy—who was assassinated during his 1968 presidential campaign—leaves behind nine children, 34 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren.

From her early life as Ethel Skakel to her marriage with Robert, Ethel forged her path as a figure of grace and resilience. She founded the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights organization shortly after her husband's death, becoming a flagship advocate for social justice, environmental stewardship, and peace around the globe.

The service not only celebrated her impact but served as a poignant reminder of the sorrows and sacrifices endured by the Kennedy family. The public has seen the Kennedy lineage embroiled in heart-wrenching tragedies spanning decades, manifesting the complex interplay of fame, power, and loss. Most tragically, Ethel's husband was gunned down just as he seemed poised to lead the nation toward equality and justice. She dedicated her life to ensuring his vision persevered.

Aside from Biden, Obama, and Clinton, tributes poured in from various sectors of society. Notably, Martin Luther King III, son of the iconic civil rights leader, attended the memorial, encapsulating the collaborative spirit recent American history has relied upon.

Attendees also included many of Ethel's children and grandchildren, each sharing personal anecdotes about her strength and character. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and his wife, Cheryl Hines, were seen arriving hand-in-hand, expression of familial bonds amid the public spotlight. Rory Kennedy, her youngest daughter, shared emotional recollections, stating, "Mummy was all I had, but she was more than I could have ever hoped for."

Musical tributes also included performances by beloved artists. Singer Sting honored Ethel with his heartfelt rendition, complimenting her life's work and spirit. Not to be outdone, Kenny Chesney began the service singing "You Are My Sunshine," establishing the memorial as more than just reflections of sorrow; it was also about celebration.

Often dubbed "the matriarch of the Kennedy family," Ethel embodied the trials and triumphs of many generations. Although her family was linked to privilege, they experienced harrowing losses at the height of their fame. Overcoming challenges, Ethel continued advocating for her late husband’s ideals, reminding many of the need for service and compassion toward others.

During the memorial, Kerry Kennedy spoke fondly about her mother’s life, emphasizing how Ethel inspired those around her to pursue meaningful engagement with the world. Kerry leads the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights, which operates under the values and influence of her parents. She stated, "We are comforted knowing she is reunited with the love of her life, our father, Robert F. Kennedy; her children David and Michael; and her grandchildren."

Even as sickness took its toll, Ethel remained centered, citing her activist spirit and the love of those around her. She showed remarkable vitality, spending her last summer relishing family moments, from waterfront picnics to serene lunch gatherings with her loved ones.

The impact of Ethel Kennedy's life resonates deep within the fabric of American social history. She passionately championed causes often disregarded, carving out supportive networks under the Kennedy name—a name synonymous with hope, change, and resilience.

Following the service, people across the nation expressed their condolences, showcasing the wide-reaching influence Ethel had on generations. Many have described her as one of the last true embodiments of the 'Camelot' era, advocating tirelessly for justice and honoring her husband's legacy.

Indeed, Ethel Kennedy was not just the widow of Robert F. Kennedy, but she was an indispensable figure who transformed personal grief and public loss toward meaningful action. Her legacy remains firmly etched within the hearts of those she touched, and her memory inspires. The Kennedy family’s realities, steeped deeply within the broader American experience, drive home the importance of empathy and collective responsibility.

While her physical presence may have waned, the impact and lessons drawn from her life, infused with activism and love, have created ripples through time. Advocates, equality seekers, and humanitarians everywhere continue to honor her mission, carrying forward the torch she carried."
