Elton John has revealed that the heartfelt lyrics of his new song, "When This Old World Is Done With Me," brought him to tears during the recording sessions for his upcoming collaborative album with Brandi Carlile, titled Who Believes in Angels?. The album is set to be released on April 4, 2025, marking a significant milestone in John's illustrious career and showcasing a deep exploration of personal themes.
In a recent appearance on the Smartless podcast, John shared the emotional journey he experienced while writing the album, particularly highlighting moments that challenged him to confront his own mortality. He recounted how the song's chorus stirred emotions that resonated with him as he reflected on his life. "I wrote a song at the end of the album, and I just get the lyrics, Bernie Taupin’s lyrics called ‘When This Old World Is Done With Me’. And so I’m writing the verse, like, ‘Oh, this is really pretty.’ And then I get to the chorus and of course it’s about my death. And when you get to my age, which is near 100, you think, ‘How much time have I got left?’"
John's candid reflection led him to break down emotionally for 45 minutes while recording, a moment captured on film. He expressed how much family means to him as he navigates thoughts of legacy, stating, "You’ve got children, you’ve got a wonderful husband, you just think about mortality. And so when I got to the chorus, I just broke down for 45 minutes – and it’s all on film." This raw vulnerability resonates throughout the album, offering listeners a glimpse into John’s deeply human experience.
This upcoming release also signifies John’s pioneering approach to sharing his creative process. For the first time in his career, the recording of the album has been documented on film, revealing intimate moments behind the scenes. Titled Who Believes in Angels? Stories From the Edge of Creation, the accompanying film will premiere in New York City on the same day as the album launch. Additionally, a live Q&A featuring John, Carlile, Taupin, and producer Andrew Watt will take place at the 92nd Street Y, allowing fans to engage directly with the artists.
The unique filming experience is described by Carlile as something deeply personal. She remarked, "I want everybody to see it because it’s really human, like deeply flawed and embarrassing. And the kind of shit that you do when you forget that there is a camera on is what’s really interesting." With such honest portrayals of artistry and emotion, the film aims to connect with audiences on a personal level.
In the lead-up to the album’s release, John and Carlile have released a couple of singles, including the title track and "Swing for the Fences." With a steady buzz surrounding the project, even The New York Times covered the album, noting its raw emotional depth and John's return to collaborative efforts, reminiscent of his early works.
To top off the anticipated album release, John will celebrate his 78th birthday on March 25. Tributes have poured in from fans, friends, and family alike, celebrating his legacy and the joy he brings to those around him. Carlile shared on Instagram, "Happy birthday to my darling Elton. How wonderful life is while you’re in the world." Similarly, Taupin expressed his admiration through social media, stating, "Happy birthday to my dear old pal who never fails to inspire me to be better." Even John’s husband and manager, David Furnish, posted a heartfelt message, expressing his love and appreciation: "Happy Birthday to my brilliant, beautiful, big-hearted husband. Thank you for all the love and joy you give to me and our sons. Love you forever."
Following the album's launch, John and Carlile are also set to perform on Saturday Night Live on April 5, further promising to captivate audiences with their heartfelt musical offerings. The connection between their artistry and the intimate experiences shared during this project exemplifies why both artists remain at the forefront of music today.
As the world anticipates Who Believes in Angels? and the subsequent film premiere, Elton John continues to remind us all of the importance of reflecting on life's fleeting moments and cherishing the connections that make it worthwhile.
