Egyptian universities have recently made significant strides on the global stage, as evidenced by the 2025 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings. Under the guidance of Dr. Ayman Ashour, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, these institutions have not only improved their standings but also showcased their capabilities across various fields of study.
According to the announcement by THE, 28 Egyptian universities have been recognized for their excellence in engineering, 28 for physics, 23 for medical sciences, and several others across disciplines like computer science, social sciences, and humanities. This marks a substantial progress from the previous year’s standings, underscoring the effectiveness of Egypt's national higher education strategy.
Dr. Ashour expressed pride over these achievements, noting, "The remarkable results attained by Egyptian universities indicate the successful steps taken by the Ministry within the framework of our national strategy for higher education and scientific research." He highlighted how global rankings serve as useful tools for academic institutions, fostering improvement and encouraging competitive spirit.
The 2025 rankings show increased representation of Egyptian universities compared to last year. For example, the numbers of institutions listed under medical and health sciences rose from 17 to 23, and those recognized for computer science increased from 14 to 17. Such improvements reflect not only growth in quantity but also quality, as institutions strive to meet international standards.
Among the institutions making the list, notable mentions include the Egyptian-Japanese University of Science and Technology and Assiut University, both ranked between 400-301 for engineering. On the other end of the spectrum, prestigious universities like Cairo University and the American University in Cairo also made significant contributions, reinforcing their status as leading educational establishments.
With respect to the rankings, the list showcases impressive diversity: for physics, 28 Egyptian institutions were recognized, which was also the case for life sciences. Meanwhile, the fields of social sciences and business and economics saw ten and five universities respectively entering the ranks.
Dr. Abada Sarhan, President of Future University, highlighted this achievement by affirming, "We’re proud to be part of these rankings, which reflect not only our quest for academic excellence but also the collaborative efforts across the educational sector to advance Egypt’s reputation globally."
The rankings published by THE are seen as comprehensive and reliable, evaluating universities based on multiple criteria including teaching quality, research impact, international outlook, and income from industry. This multifaceted approach ensures institutions are convincingly placed on the global map.
Further analysis of the results provided insights about the distribution of Egyptian universities across different categories. A total of 23 institutions were recognized for their accomplishments within medical and health sciences, marking another upward trend for Egyptian education!
Globally, the Cairo University emerged as one of the top contenders within the 400-301 range, affirming its longstanding legacy of academic excellence. Other universities also celebrated their rankings, including those falling within the 1000-801 category.
On the broader scale, to drive future advancements, the Ministry of Higher Education, under Dr. Ashour’s leadership, has emphasized the importance of bolstering international research collaborations and quality assurance across educational institutions. "We are committed to supporting our universities to not only gain ranks, but to improve significantly on the ground, facilitating even greater research outputs and societal contributions," affirmed Dr. Ashour.
This latest ranking edition of THE stands as testimony not only to the ambition and growth of Egypt's higher educational institutions but also to the dedicated efforts of the Ministry to forge partnerships and invest significantly in educational methodologies and infrastructure.
The reflection of these efforts can also be seen through various initiatives aimed at encouraging merit-based research and enhancing the visibility of Egyptian research globally. Dr. Ayman Ashour reiterated, "Our focus is on providing resources, support, and frameworks conducive to achieving world-class standards, making Egypt prominent on the educational frontier."
The road to educational excellence is long, yet these rankings serve as milestones illustrating Egypt's commitment to transforming its academic institutions and nurturing capable leaders for the future. With such promising results, the vision to establish Egypt as a beacon of educational prestige is increasingly within reach.
