Edmundo Sosa Shines As Phillies Start Strong

Sosa's hot bat and versatility boost the Phillies early in the season

PHILADELPHIA — As the Philadelphia Phillies enter the second week of the 2025 MLB season, one player is already making waves: Edmundo Sosa. The versatile infielder has stepped up in significant ways, filling in for Trea Turner and Bryson Stott while showcasing his impressive skills at the plate and in the field.

In just four games this season, Sosa has posted a remarkable .600 batting average, going 9-for-15 with four doubles and five RBIs. His performance has not only energized the lineup but also prompted manager Rob Thomson to joke, "I'm going to call MLB and see if we can play 10," highlighting Sosa's impact on the team.

On Wednesday night against the Colorado Rockies, Sosa continued his hot streak, going 3-for-4 with a double, a run scored, and two RBIs in a 5-1 victory. His two-run double in the eighth inning was crucial, particularly after several star players struck out with the bases loaded earlier in the game. "I mean, Sosa’s been probably our best hitter for the five games now," said Trea Turner. "He’s been on fire. He’s a good player. Those guys were electric tonight."

Despite his stellar start, Sosa finds himself on the bench for Thursday's game against the Rockies, as the Phillies will face right-hander Antonio Senzatela. The lineup for April 3, 2025, features Kyle Schwarber leading off, followed by Turner, Harper, Bohm, Kepler, Castellanos, Realmuto, Stott, and Marsh, with Taijuan Walker making his 2025 debut on the mound.

Thomson has committed to keeping Bryson Stott as the regular second baseman and Brandon Marsh as the regular center fielder, which complicates Sosa’s opportunities. However, the manager acknowledges Sosa's value, stating, "He plays hard, he’s really good in the field, and he is swinging it right now," according to pitcher Zack Wheeler, who struck out 10 Rockies in the same game.

Sosa has added a different dynamic to the bottom of the Phillies' lineup, providing a spark that could lead to more significant playing time. With the team not facing another left-handed pitcher until they meet Cy Young winner Chris Sale and the Atlanta Braves on April 8, Sosa's role may shift as the season progresses.

"He’s one of my favorite players to watch in the big leagues," Wheeler said. "Just the way he plays. He plays the game the right way. He plays hard. He’s just a good guy. So it’s cool to watch." Sosa's hard work and dedication have not gone unnoticed, as he has become a key player for the Phillies early in the season.

In addition to Sosa's contributions, Johan Rojas also shined in the game against Colorado. Rojas went 2-for-2 with a walk, demonstrating his ability to move runners effectively. He executed a perfect sacrifice bunt in the fifth inning to advance Sosa to third base and showed a more controlled approach at the plate, which has been a focus for him this season.

"This was the best major-league game he’s played, in my opinion," Thomson praised. "That’s exactly what he needs to do. He needs to move runners, put the ball in play, sacrifice and play good defense. He really played well." Rojas echoed this sentiment, stating, "I did my job," after his performance.

The Phillies have also been focusing on improving their bunting skills, as evidenced by a 3:30 p.m. optional bunting practice before Wednesday's game. Rojas was among those working on their technique, a skill the team has emphasized throughout spring training and into the regular season.

As the season unfolds, the depth of the Phillies' roster will be tested, particularly with Sosa and Rojas providing solid options off the bench. Their ability to contribute in limited roles could be crucial for the team as they navigate the long season ahead.

Looking ahead, the Phillies are set to face a series of right-handed starters, which may limit Sosa's opportunities for the time being. However, his strong performance thus far has set a standard for the bench players, emphasizing the importance of being ready when called upon.

"A lot of questions," Rojas said regarding his conversations with Sosa about preparing for limited playing time. "I learn from him a lot. I just feel extremely grateful to play here and to be in front of our fans. It’s an amazing feeling to be back again with all the fans that we have here."

As the Phillies continue their campaign, the contributions of players like Sosa and Rojas will be critical as they aim for success in the competitive landscape of Major League Baseball. With a solid start to the season, the team looks poised to make a strong push, and the excitement surrounding Sosa's performance will surely keep fans engaged.
