Dutch Media Stars Transition To New Shows And Salaries

Malou Petter discusses her lucrative move to Talpa and Linda de Mol's controversial relationship.

Media watchers are buzzing as Dutch television personalities, particularly Malou Petter and Linda de Mol, announce significant changes to their careers and show plans. Petter, who is making the leap from the NOS Journaal to Talpa, has confirmed she will be investing her talents and expertise on SBS 6’s new evening news segment, Nieuws van de Dag, which will premiere after the New Year.

Petter has openly shared the financial benefits of her transition, stating, “Ik ben er wel op vooruitgegaan, ja,” which translates to, "I have definitely improved my earnings." According to reports by SBS, she admitted during an interview with Wilfred Genee, “Die NPO-budgetten gaan echt niet naar de NOS-presentatoren,” meaning "Those NPO budgets really don’t go to NOS presenters." This shift is seen not only as lucrative but also as liberative for Petter, who expressed her desire to step out of her comfort zone after fourteen years at NOS.

Meanwhile, Linda de Mol has found herself at the center of public discussion again, following her reconciliation with Jeroen Rietbergen. De Mol is no stranger to media scrutiny after Rietbergen’s earlier controversies, including questionable behavior behind the scenes of The Voice of Holland. Jeroen Woe and Niels van der Laan humorously commented during the season finale of Even Tot Hier, “Ongelooflijk!” (Unbelievable!), reflecting the incredulity surrounding Linda’s renewed relationship with someone who has faced serious allegations of misconduct.

Woe highlighted the absurdity of their reunion, stating, “Wil je echt niet weten wat Jeroen Rietbergen allemaal heeft uitgevroten,” or "You wouldn’t want to know what Jeroen Rietbergen has done." This lighthearted jab serves as commentary on the intense public fascination with personal ups and downs of television personalities.

On New Year’s Eve, Hélène Hendriks will also be stepping onto the screen with her own show, Hélène's Oudejaarsborrel, which will air at 22:30 on SBS6. It’s shaping up to be a slow transition night filled with notable figures from the television industry, each with their share of controversy, intrigue, and, of course, laughter. While some shows may invite the public to watch with amusement, the personal lives of these media figures evoke serious conversations about ethics, relationships, and public judgement.

Petter believes her new role at Talpa will provide her with fresh opportunities, stating, “Ik vind het heerlijk dat ik wat meer ga verdienen. Dat ga ik niet ontkennen” or "I really enjoy making more money. I can’t deny it." Yet, she asserts her motivations are not solely financial; she’s eager to learn and grow. This contrasts with the challenges faced by those like Merel Westrik, whose career suffered after switching networks—something Petter seems cautious of as she navigates this new path.

Engaging with these stories reveals much about Dutch media culture and the shifts influential personalities are making. The changes reflect both personal ambitions and potential risks associated with public perception, as displayed most humorously by Van der Laan and Woe. These developments will undoubtedly shape viewers' relationships with the stars they follow.

The media industry is filled with surprises, and Petter's positive outlook and Linda's polarizing choice only add to the ever-evolving narrative of Dutch television. With New Year’s celebrations just around the corner and fresh programming lined up, viewers can expect more twists, turns, and, potentially, controversies to unravel in 2024.
