Dubai Awards $5.5 Billion Metro Blue Line Contract

New route aims to improve connectivity and boost economy by 2040.

The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has embarked on a transformative project with the awarding of the Dubai Metro Blue Line contract, amounting to 20.5 billion dirhams (approximately $5.5 billion). This major infrastructure initiative will not only enrich the city’s transport system, but it is also poised to substantially impact Dubai’s economy, as detailed by RTA officials.

Under this groundbreaking project, the consortium comprising Türkiye's MAPA and Limak, along with China's state-owned CRRC, will construct the Blue Line, which will span 30 kilometers and feature 14 stations. Construction is set to kick off in April 2025, and the line is pegged for completion by September 9, 2029. This date holds special significance, marking exactly 20 years since the inaugural launch of the Dubai Metro, which initially opened with ten stations on September 9, 2009.

“The Blue Line will offer sustainable and flexible public transport solutions,” stated Mattar Al Tayer, Director General of the RTA. He elaborated on how this new line will greatly improve mobility for both residents and visitors, enhancing the overall quality of life and bolstering Dubai’s reputation as a global hub for events and activities.

The economic impact projected from the Blue Line is substantial; it is expected to generate 56.5 billion dirhams by 2040, driven by increased efficiency, reduced road congestion, diminished fuel consumption, and lower carbon emissions, as Al Tayer highlighted.

More details have now come to light concerning the route and structure of the Blue Line. The extensive network will include 15.5 kilometers of underground tracks and 14.5 kilometers of elevated tracks. Notably, it will feature Dubai Metro’s first-ever crossing over Dubai Creek by means of a 1,300-meter bridge. The interconnected route will connect dense urban areas and link important destinations such as Marsa, Dubai Creek, Festival City, and three stations at International City, as well as Al Rashidiya, Al Warqa, Mirdif, Silicon Oasis, and Academic City.

The RTA announced the strategic design focus of the Blue Line which aims for seamless connectivity with the existing metro lines. There will be three major interchange stations, integrating the Blue Line with the existing Green and Red Lines. Al Khor will connect with the Green Line, Centrepoint will serve the Red Line, and another interchange is planned at International City.

Al Tayer elaborated on the two primary routes of the Blue Line. The first route starts at Al Khor Interchange Station on the Green Line and will lead to notable sites such as Dubai Festival City, before reaching International City. This section spans 21 kilometers with 10 stations.

The second route initiates at Centrepoint Interchange Station on the Red Line, passing through Mirdif and Al Warqa before linking to International City. This 9-kilometer route comprises four stations. Both routes are expected to seamlessly integrate with the existing metro network, facilitating efficient public transportation throughout the emirate.

Another intriguing aspect of the Blue Line project will be the architectural design of one of its prominent stations at Dubai Creek Harbour. Designed by the renowned firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill—creators of iconic buildings like the Burj Khalifa—this station is expected to become another landmark for Dubai.

Overall, the Blue Line project symbolizes Dubai’s commitment to enhancing its public transport infrastructure, aiming not just for convenience but also for sustainability and economic growth. With the construction slated to start soon and completion projected to be only five years away, the anticipation among residents grows as they look forward to easy access to more areas of the city.

Undoubtedly, the Dubai Metro Blue Line will play a pivotal role in shaping the future transportation dynamics of the city, setting new standards for public transport efficiency and connectivity.
