Magadan's new airport terminal has officially welcomed its first test flight, marking a significant milestone for the region's aviation infrastructure. The inaugural flight arrived from Novosibirsk at 8:45 AM local time on December 20, as reported by Magadan Pravda. Passengers arrived to festive music and were presented with gifts, underscoring the community's excitement over the terminal's long-awaited opening.
The new airport terminal covers approximately 15,000 square meters and features 14 check-in counters, as well as one dedicated to oversized baggage. For the convenience of travelers, there are 12 elevators and escalators within the facility. Plans also include long-term and short-term parking for nearly 500 vehicles adjacent to the terminal.
The passengers aboard flight S7-5219 were treated to a warm reception complete with flowers, northern dances, and lively performances from a musical orchestra. This ceremony not only celebrates the new terminal but also the broader vision laid out by the Russian government to improve regional air travel. Construction of the terminal began following President Vladimir Putin's directive to transfer full ownership of Magadan Airport to the region, aiming to increase the efficiency of air transport services.
During the May 2020 announcement, it was disclosed by the government, reported by MagadanMedia, more than 11 billion rubles were allocated for the project. The new terminal is expected to handle up to 800 passengers per hour, increasing the passenger traffic on both regional and inter-regional routes.
Employing energy-efficient technologies, the terminal stands out for its modern heating and ventilation systems, which are particularly advantageous during the harsh winters of the region. The airport complex is equipped with two jet bridges, ensuring comfort regardless of the season with the integrated climate-control systems.
The architectural design and interiors pay homage to the rich natural environment and the resource wealth of the Magadan region, with parts of the interior dedicated to the famed Russian poet Vladimir Vysotsky, after whom the airport is named. These thoughtful design elements aim to immerse visitors in the cultural heart of Magadan.
Building on this initial momentum, the regional government is optimistic about the terminal's potential to transform local air travel and stimulate economic growth. The newly inaugurated facility not only signifies improved transportation options for residents and visitors alike but also marks another step forward for Magadan on the path of modernization.
With direct flights scheduled and subsidies available through airlines like Aeroflot and S7 Airlines for eligible passengers, local authorities encourage residents to take advantage of the opportunities. According to government sources, booking subsidized tickets can now be done easily both online and via the airlines' offices. The subsidies are meant to make air travel more accessible for groups including seniors, families with children, and local residents.
With these developments, Magadan's airport stands poised to not just serve as a transit point, but as a gateway, opening up new avenues for tourism, business connections, and cultural exchanges. Residents and officials alike are hopeful this new chapter will encourage more visitors to discover the beauty and opportunities of their region.
