Documentary Reveals Impact Of Joplin Tornado Tragedy

Netflix's 'The Twister: Caught in the Storm' chronicles the deadly storm's effects on survivors and the community.

Almost 14 years after the catastrophic EF5 tornado devastated Joplin, Missouri, a powerful documentary titled The Twister: Caught in the Storm premiered on Netflix, showcasing the tragedy that unfolded on May 22, 2011. The film delves into the lives of those affected by the tornado, intertwining stories of Joplin High School graduates and amateur storm chasers. As the tornado struck on graduation day, the documentary presents a harrowing look at the chaos that ensued, while also highlighting the resilience of the community.

The Joplin tornado, one of the deadliest in U.S. history, left a profound impact on the town, resulting in the loss of 161 lives, with 158 categorized as direct deaths. The destruction was widespread: 6,954 homes were completely obliterated, while 359 others suffered major damage. St. John’s Regional Medical Center and Joplin High School were among the numerous buildings that required complete rebuilding. Churches, schools, and businesses also succumbed to the ferocity of the storm, reshaping the environment and community.

In the documentary, viewers hear from survivors like Kaylee, who vividly recalls, “I looked up, and I saw clear blue sky. We were in the eye, totally surrounded by chaos.” This chilling reflection encapsulates the suddenness and unpredictability of the storm which, at its peak, stretched almost a mile wide and traveled more than 20 miles, making it the second EF5 tornado to strike Missouri since 1950.

Among the many heart-wrenching stories is that of William Richard Norton, a young YouTuber who had just graduated from high school that fateful day. Will, as he was known, was driving home with his father, Mark, when the tornado struck their vehicle. The two were on the phone with family members when disaster struck; Will was pulled through the sunroof of their Hummer and thrown into a nearby pond. His father survived the ordeal despite serious injuries.

Mark Norton, who later reflected on that day in an interview, expressed how moments before the tornado hit, he could feel the fear radiating from Will, reciting scripture as they sought safety. “If we had been five seconds sooner, we would have been past it,” Mark lamented, still touched by memories of their last moments together. Will's body was found a week later in that same pond, where he had landed, prompting a wave of tributes from family and friends. In his memory, a baseball field was named the Will Norton Miracle Field.

The documentary captures more than the storm itself; it bears witness to the fallout and long-term impacts on survivors. Steven Weersing, a then-16-year-old who found himself airborne during the tornado, shares, “I was just flying. I thought my life was over.” Miraculously, Steven survived, but he fell victim to a rare, flesh-eating fungus post-tornado, facing severe health challenges that resulted in multiple amputations. His harrowing tale parallels that of other victims who contracted the same strain, with at least three dying from its effects.

Documentary director Alexandra Lacey aims to highlight not just the destruction but the stories of hope and survival amid despair. Reports from meteorologists and eyewitness accounts provide a full picture of that tragic day, shedding light on the sheer unpredictability of tornadoes, especially for those in densely populated areas like Joplin.

Though the storm’s devastation was immense, the resilience of Joplin played a significant role in the community's recovery. Mark Norton, reflecting on the legacy of his late son and the town’s spirit, offered words that resonate with many who endured hardship that day: “We had 18 wonderful years, and we know we’ll see him again.” The importance of community and remembrance stands as a pillar of strength among survivors, as they continue to honor those lost while rebuilding their lives.

As the documentary draws together personal stories, images, and footage from the day, it helps to illuminate what Joplin endured and how it transformed into a story of resilience, awareness, and healing. The tornado may have taken lives and destroyed homes, but the unyielding spirit of Joplin remains as a beacon of hope.

Twister: Caught in the Storm is more than just a recounting of a disaster; it is a testament to human survival in the wake of overwhelming odds, reminding viewers of the fragility of life and the strength found in community.
