Do Deuce Crowned Horse Of The Year At JRA Awards

The five-year-old stallion captures the prestigious title after dominating major races and earning accolades from the racing community.

Do Deuce has been named Horse of the Year at the 2024 Japan Racing Association (JRA) Awards, which were announced on January 7, 2024. The five-year-old stallion, trained by Yasuo Tomomichi and owned by Masayuki Matsushima, earned this prestigious recognition after winning major races, including the Tenno Sho Autumn and the Japan Cup.

Winning 236 out of the 256 total votes cast, Do Deuce not only captured the Horse of the Year title but also received unanimous approval for the Best Older Male Horse category. His outstanding performances over the past year have left fans and trainers alike celebrating his achievements.

The annual JRA Awards ceremony, honoring various racing categories and highlights from the racing season, is scheduled for January 27, 2024. Do Deuce's remarkable season was underscored by several key victories, including two Grade 1 wins, signifying him as one of Japan's leading thoroughbreds.

Despite setbacks earlier in the year, which included finishing fifth at the Dubai Turf and sixth at the Takarazuka Kinen, Do Deuce made waves upon his return to form. His victory at the Tenno Sho Autumn was particularly dramatic, as he made his way from the back of the pack to clinch the win on the final stretch, showcasing his racing prowess and tenacity.

During the awards announcement, Masayuki Matsushima expressed his gratitude, stating, "It’s a tremendous honor to receive this, and I thank everyone involved along the way.” Yasuo Tomomichi echoed this sentiment, attributing the stallion's success to the support from fans and the dedication of everyone involved.

Other notable awards included Best Two-Year-Old Filly going to Alma Veloce and Best Two-Year-Old Colt, awarded to Crow du Noir. Best Three-Year-Old Colt went to Danon Desail, reinforcing the competitive nature of the field.

The Best Three-Year-Old Filly award was secured by Cervinia, and the Best Older Female Horse title went to Stunning Rose. Rugal took home the title for Best Sprinter, with Soul Rush named Best Milers, and Lemon Pop being awarded Best Dirt Horse. The recognition of Nishini Daisy as Best Steeplechase Horse rounds out the remarkable accomplishments highlighted at this year’s JRA Awards.

The special award went to Forever Young and legendary jockey Yutaka Take, showcasing the contributions of key individuals to the sport.

Jockey Yutaka Take, who rode Do Deuce to victory multiple times, expressed his joy at the recognition, stating, "I’m delighted to have been part of such memorable races with Do Deuce.” The accolades serve to position Do Deuce favorably as he transitions to his next career phase.

Following his racing career, Do Deuce has moved to the Shadai Stallion Station, where he will begin his new life as a breeding stallion. The thoroughbred's pedigree and performance record have made him a valuable addition to the stallion ranks, with many anticipating his future offspring to continue his legacy.

Overall, the JRA Awards reaffirm the excitement and unpredictability of thoroughbred racing in Japan, as established stars and rising competitors vie for recognition.
