Denver Nuggets Overcome Kings 116-110 Despite Early Deficit

DeMar DeRozan shines with 33 points, surpassing Patrick Ewing on all-time scoring list.

On March 5, 2025, the Denver Nuggets emerged victorious against the Sacramento Kings with a final score of 116-110 at the Ball Arena. Despite being without key players Domantas Sabonis and Malik Monk, the Kings managed to take control early, leading by up to 13 points by the end of the first quarter.

Following the momentum set by their recent performance, the Kings, buoyed by DeMar DeRozan's extraordinary effort, showcased resilience against the high-flying Denver squad. DeRozan, who scored 33 points during the match, surpassed Hall of Famer Patrick Ewing, climbing to 27th on the NBA’s all-time scoring list with his notable three-pointer late in the first quarter.

The Kings started fiercely, setting the tone with DeRozan contributing significantly to their early lead. Although he exhibited remarkable skill and prowess, the absence of Sabonis proved detrimental for Sacramento as they sought to maintain control against the Nuggets' relentless attack.

Returning to the contest, Denver fought back assertively, overcoming the initial deficit. Russell Westbrook led the Nuggets with 25 points on 10-for-20 shooting, demonstrating his capability to lead his team during pivotal moments. Nikola Jokic also showcased his prowess, amassing 22 points and grabbing 15 rebounds, combining his scoring ability and rebounding skills to keep Denver within reach.

“This win feels important to us,” said Westbrook after the game. “We had to dig deep as we faced some tough challenges. Coming from behind isn’t easy, but we showed what we’re capable of when we stick together.”

Meanwhile, Jamal Murray contributed 24 points and eight assists, highlighting the significant depth of Denver’s roster. Michael Porter Jr. also had noteworthy contributions, scoring 13 points and securing 12 rebounds, proving to be instrumental as the game progressed.

The Kings initially seized the game with their quick offensive plays, finishing the first quarter with fireworks, thanks to DeRozan and Zach LaVine, who added 20 points himself. LaVine’s ability to stretch the floor kept the Kings competitive throughout the game.

Opponent defenses struggled to cope with the offensive onslaught by both teams, known for their strong scoring but slightly inconsistent defense. The Nuggets had to adjust continuously to Sacramento’s tactical approaches, especially with two key players missing from the Kings’ roster.

After leading 42-29 at the end of the first quarter, the Kings reached halftime with the score at 65-55, showcasing their tactical discipline and scoring prowess, largely driven by DeRozan’s outstanding performance and the support of Jonas Valanciunas, who contributed 19 points and 13 rebounds.

“Winning this game strengthens our confidence as we push forward,” noted DeRozan. “Even without Sabonis and Monk, we showed what we are capable of. This season is far from over for us.”

The game progressed with both teams trading baskets but the margin began to decrease as the Nuggets found their rhythm down the stretch. Denver’s determination resulted not only from the talent within the squad but also from the strategic decisions made on the court.

Heading fiercely toward the fourth quarter, the Nuggets ramped up their defensive efforts, attempting to close the gap. Three free throws from Murray shifted the scoreboard to give Denver the lead at 104-102 with just four minutes remaining.

Despite the pressure, the Kings managed to respond with LaVine trading three-pointers with both Murray and Westbrook, keeping Sacramento's hopes alive as they reduced the deficit to 113-110. Nonetheless, the Kings were unable to capitalize on their opportunities down the stretch, losing by six points as the Nuggets sealed their victory at the free-throw line.

With this result, the Nuggets improved their record to 40 wins and 22 losses, asserting their position as one of the top teams within the Western Conference. On the other hand, the Kings, now at 32 wins and 29 losses, are left to rethink their strategies and adaptations moving forward without their main center.

Moving forward, the Kings will look to regroup and bounce back from this defeat. With their potent scoring capabilities led by DeRozan and LaVine, they remain hopeful for upcoming games as they push for playoff contention.
