“Obviously, Sean [Payton] was trying to get me from the Broncos,” Johnson shared, also noting that the Seattle Seahawks had shown interest, thanks to their offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak, under whom he had spent the previous season.
Ultimately, Johnson opted to sign a three-year deal with the Saints, valued at $34.5 million, after weighing his options with various teams. Combining Johnson’s skill set with his familiarity with Payton’s coaching style could have presented an exciting opportunity for the Broncos, had he chosen to join their ranks.
As the offseason unfolds, Broncos management seems focused on maximizing their offensive capabilities. Engram’s dynamic skill set aligns with Payton's philosophy, which includes seeking what is often referred to as a "Joker"—a versatile player who can create mismatches against opposing defenses. Entering his ninth season at the age of 30, there is some concern regarding his endurance over the course of a demanding schedule. There are indications that they might look to draft another tight end early in the upcoming draft, owing to the limited depth at the position beyond Engram. With the likelihood of selecting talent that aligns with their offensive vision, the Broncos could be deliberate with their picks, eying potential standout players like Tetairoa McMillan, who recorded impressive stats of 1,200 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns in his last collegiate season. His skill set could complement Nix’s prowess, as the quarterback himself threw for over 3,700 yards with a completion rate of 68% last season.
