Denise Welch Admits She Is A Helicopter Parent To Her Famous Sons

The Loose Women star shares insights into her parenting style and the excitement about her son's upcoming Glastonbury performance.

Denise Welch, the well-known TV personality and panelist on the show Loose Women, has openly shared her thoughts on her parenting style, which she identifies as that of a helicopter parent. In an article published on March 22, 2025, she candidly reflected on her eager involvement in every aspect of her sons' lives, Matty Healy, the lead singer of the popular band The 1975, and actor Louis Healy.

The term helicopter parent is often used to describe parents who are overprotective and controlling, aiming to stay closely involved in their children's lives. Despite the potentially negative association that accompanies the label, Denise proudly embraces her role. In her latest column for The i Paper, she described her parenting approach with a touch of humor and self-awareness. "The radar is on full alert at all times and I insert myself into any aspect of their lives I can squeeze into. Totally uninvited, I swoop in with military precision to offer advice and solutions to problems they don't have," she wrote.

Denise recognizes that her sons sometimes tease her about her manner, as they have dubbed her a "Poundland Kris Jenner," referring to the matriarch of the Kardashian family known for managing her children's careers. Though she acknowledges her sons' sentiments, she shows no signs of adjusting her parenting style any time soon. "I also feel the need to talk to them every day and if they don't respond immediately to my calls or texts, I wish I could have an all-points bulletin or BOLO [an alert system used by police departments] out on them in minutes. Yes, I watch too much American television," she humorously confessed in her column.

A more serious aspect of her parenting journey emerged when Denise reflected on her evolution as a mother. She admitted that she was not as hands-on during her sons’ early years, a period she describes as having a more laid-back approach. "I ask myself why I became a later-life helicopter mum. I think it's because I didn't need constant assurance when they were little that I was the most important person in their lives, and now they're grown, I do," she said.

Denise’s relationship with her sons isn't just about hovering; it's deeply rooted in love and concern. Recently, it was revealed that Denise had struggled with postnatal depression after the birth of her eldest son, Matty. She has candidly discussed the difficulties that shaped her mothering experience, explaining how postpartum challenges affected her bond with Matty. "I was going through the emotions of smiling, and I went to bed that night and I had the first panic attack I'd ever had in my entire life, from nowhere," she previously shared. Despite these challenges, Denise remains fiercely proud of Matty's accomplishments as the lead singer of The 1975.

This March, the excitement around Matty reached a pinnacle when The 1975 was announced as headliners for the Glastonbury Festival, alongside notable artists Biffy Clyro and Alanis Morissette. Denise couldn’t contain her enthusiasm, sharing on Instagram about attending her very first festival. "I guess I'll be going to my first UK festival!!!" she posted, showcasing her newfound excitement over her son’s career achievements. Fans echoed her sentiment, celebrating with remarks like, "This is amazing ❤️ you must be so so proud!"

However, while Denise's joy was palpable, it contrasted with some fans' reactions to the Glastonbury line-up. Many expressed disappointment online, claiming it was one of the weakest arrangements they had seen in years. Yet, for Denise, the buzz surrounding her son’s performance eclipsed any negativity. She showed her unwavering support, declaring herself proud of her son, who has navigated the challenging music industry to reach new heights.

As Denise Welch continues to embrace her role as a helicopter parent, she remains committed to supporting and nurturing her sons, whether they need it or not. With her unique blend of humor, love, and unwavering involvement in their lives, she has created a dynamic and supportive family atmosphere. Despite the criticisms often associated with helicopter parenting, Denise stands unapologetically proud of the love and attention she provides her ambitious children.
