David Ancca Cuyo Named New Incas Interpreter For Inti Raymi 2025

The festival embraces cultural heritage with the selection of Ancca, replacing the previous interpreter amid allegations of misconduct.

The 2025 Inti Raymi festival will see a new face representing the historic figure of the Incas, with David Ancca Cuyo stepping up as the new interpreter following the departure of Robert Paucara Churana. This decision was announced by the Empresa Municipal de Festejos y Promoción Turística del Cusco (Emufec), which has the task of overseeing the festival, one of the most significant events of the Andean festive calendar.

The transition to Ancca is significant, especially after Paucara was removed following allegations of psychological and physical violence. His dismissal was communicated by Emufec’s board president, Roberto Erick Callañaupa Pumayali, who emphasized the necessity to maintain the festival's historical and cultural dignity. "Analizing this problem, unanimously we decided to resolve the contract of Robert Paucara. It's important for us to highlight the essence and image of the Incas, and this representation cannot be tainted," Callañaupa stated during the press conference.

Ancca, 46, was chosen not only for his performance and experience but also because of his deep-rooted passion for Andean culture. With extensive knowledge of historic traditions, he has previously participated as part of the royal entourage of the Inti Raymi, and had the honor of portraying Pachacútec from 2017 to 2019. 'The first time was quite thrilling; I was very happy to represent such a historical figure who enhanced our culture,' Ancca once said.0 He brings to the role his background as a teacher of Language and Literature, fluency in Quechua, and commitment to the accurate representation of the Tahuantinsuyo lineage.

Robert Paucara Churana’s career took a downturn following accusations of violence last year. He has since declared his intention to take legal actions against media outlets disseminated incorrect information, asserting the denouncement against him was archived. "We will file charges because what we received was slander," he remarked. Despite his claims, the legal measures imposed against him continue to be enforced, indicating the seriousness of the allegations.

Emufec stressed the importance of fidelity to tradition, indicating Ancca’s known adherence to the principles of cultural expression will serve as the guiding force for the upcoming 2025 celebration. The festival is aimed at projecting the richness of the Andean heritage and promoting the cultural identity of Cusco on both national and international stages.

The news of Ancca's appointment has stirred various reactions across local and national communities, highlighting the central role the position of the Incas holds culturally. The festival celebrates not only the history of the region but also the enduring significance of representing such cultural figures authentically.

Observers argue the move to replace Paucara with Ancca is appropriate, as safeguarding the integrity of the festival is non-negotiable. Local representatives, such as Ana Cecilia Uré from the Society of Public Benevolence of Cusco, also conveyed messages to current and future interpreters about the need for exemplary conduct, reminding them they act as ambassadors for Cusco and Peru.

'They have to present themselves well not just publicly but also privately, realizing the representation they hold,' Uré encouraged, calling for self-awareness and accountability among those who represent historical figures.

With David Ancca Cuyo now at the helm, the 2025 Inti Raymi promises to not only continue its festivities but also to reinforce the cultural narrative intrinsic to Cusco's identity. The festival will remain focused on showcasing the legacies of the Incas, ensuring both residents and visitors can connect with this cherished tradition, grounded firmly on the ethical principles of the community and respect for its history.

The upcoming few months leading to the festival will likely highlight Ancca's preparations as he assumes the illustrious role, ensuring he fully embodies the spirit of the Inti Raymi and the cultural essence it encapsulates.
