Daniela Santanchè Faces Controversy Over Counterfeit Hermès Bags

Minister threatened with legal action as counterfeit claims emerge from past gifting incident.

Italian Minister of Tourism Daniela Santanchè has found herself embroiled in controversy following allegations of her purchasing counterfeit Hermès bags, with claims supported by testimony from Mauro, known as 'Maradona,' described as the most renowned street vendor of counterfeit luxury goods in Versilia. The allegations surfaced after Francesca Pascale, who reportedly received two Hermès bags from Santanchè, stated they were later discovered to be fakes without any identifying codes.

The story began with Pascale’s revelations published by HuffPost, prompting subsequent coverage by Il Fatto Quotidiano where journalist Selvaggia Lucarelli reported claims from Maradona, who mentioned he had sold bags, including ‘mini Kellys’ and ‘Birkin’ designs, to Santanchè over the years.

According to Maradona, who has reportedly enjoyed notoriety as a vucumprà (street vendor) for counterfeit luxury items, Santanchè often bought bags during her visits to the beach, attempting to conceal her purchases under the tent. He alleged, “She buys them on the seaside; no one suspects anything when these characters wear my bags.”

The minister, who vehemently denied the allegations, announced plans to sue Il Fatto Quotidiano for defamation, asserting, “The only falsehood here is the news.” Despite this, she has opted not to pursue legal action against Pascale, who confirmed her claims about the counterfeit gifts she received.

For the first time, Pascale discussed the gifts, mentioning, “I received two Hermès bags; Berlusconi once scolded me for accepting them.” This initial admission sparked renewed scrutiny about Santanchè's connection to counterfeits, leading to questions about the legal ramifications for her if the allegations are proven true.

The basic facts establish the timeline indicating the gifts were exchanged around 2014, with Pascale asserting she took the bags for repairs to a boutique, where they were assessed and found to be fraudulent.

If Santanchè knowingly sold counterfeit goods, she could face serious legal consequences. According to legal sources, if she was aware the bags were fake, selling them could lead to charges of receiving stolen goods, punishable by up to eight years’ imprisonment and fines ranging from €516 to over €10,000, depending on the specifics of the case. On the other hand, if it is demonstrated she was unaware, she might face charges of negligent purchasing instead, leading to lesser consequences.

Maradona reiterated his claims during his interactions with Lucarelli, underscoring Santanchè’s frequent purchases of fake luxury items. This reiteration highlights the culture of counterfeit buying, particularly among wealthy clients who may prefer to avoid the high costs of genuine luxury.

After significant public attention, Santanchè took to social media, posting, “It’s ridiculous. The story is the only thing that's fake here.” She included images of the journalists who reported on the allegations, though she disabled user comments on her post, potentially to control online discourse surrounding the scandal.

The allegations against Santanchè and her efforts to quash them have been the catalyst for intense media scrutiny, sparking debates around authenticity, ethics, and accountability within the political sphere. Notably, the case has resurrected discussions surrounding the popularity of counterfeits among the elite, with past vendors proving to be the main suppliers for iconic names like Santanchè, who is now seeking to defend her reputation amid these insidious claims.

Outside of Santanchè’s immediate circle, reports indicate she may not be alone among high-profile clientele found purchasing counterfeit goods. Various testimonies suggest several prominent figures acquire similar products, highlighting the depth of the counterfeit market.

While Santanchè has promised legal action, it remains to be seen how the narrative will evolve, especially as more discussions emerge concerning her relationships with individuals like Pascale and the broader community engrossed within the counterfeit luxury scene. The stark reality of high-profile figures entangled with counterfeit items continues to pose significant challenges to the perceived integrity of Italian politics and fashion.

At present, as Santanchè prepares to battle allegations, public interest remains fevered with speculation about her future as Minister of Tourism and the long-term impact this scandal could engender on her reputation and career. There is certainly no shortage of discussion about luxury brands versus authenticity, and Santanchè’s case adds another layer to this contentious dialogue.
