Pogoń Szczecin Dominates Widzew Łódź With 4-0 Victory

Pogoń’s Efthymis Koulouris shines with a hat-trick as Widzew struggles continue.

On Saturday, Pogoń Szczecin triumphed over Widzew Łódź with a resounding 4-0 victory, showcasing their dominance throughout the match. The win marked Pogoń's fourth consecutive victory of the season, solidifying their position among the top teams of the league.

The match, held at the Widzew Stadium, began with intense pressure from the visiting team. Just eight minutes after kickoff, Pogoń capitalized on Widzew's defensive blunder. Following a risky pass from Widzew's goalkeeper Rafał Gikiewicz to defender Fran Alvarez, Kurzawa intercepted the pass and scored the opening goal, pushing the visitors to lead 1-0.

Despite the early setback, Widzew's attempts to rally proved ineffective, with fans growing increasingly frustrated with their team's performance. The situation worsened for the home side when, on the 38th minute, the referee awarded Pogoń a penalty after Luis da Silva was penalized for handling the ball. Efthymis Koulouris converted the penalty, extending Pogoń’s lead to 2-0, just before halftime.

The second half saw no significant change for Widzew, as Pogoń maintained control of the match. Just ten minutes after the break, Koulouris struck again, this time capitalizing on another Widzew error, making it 3-0. The Greek forward showcased his skill and determination once more, completing his hat-trick shortly afterward, scoring again with assistance from teammate Kamil Grosicki, bringing the score to 4-0.

A crowd of 16,473 witnessed the event, many voicing their displeasure at Widzew's lackluster performance, which resulted in loud booing and chants urging for change within the club's management. This loss continued Widzew's struggles, having only secured one point in the three matches they’ve played since the start of the year—an alarming statistic for the traditionally competitive club.

Meanwhile, Pogoń Szczecin's victory not only gave them three points on the table but also propelled Koulouris to the top of the league's scoring chart, highlighting his development as a key player for the team.

Post-match, Widzew's coach Daniel Myśliwiec faced scrutiny as the team's performance remains below par. "We must find solutions quickly. The team is struggling, and change is necessary to avoid slipping toward relegation," he stated, reflecting the urgent situation facing Widzew Łódź.

Pogoń Szczecin's coach, Robert Kolendowicz, expressed pride over his team's performance. "We executed our game plan perfectly and showcased our attacking prowess. It's encouraging to see our players come together as they did today," he commented after the game.

This match served as both a wake-up call for Widzew and a statement performance for Pogoń, indicating their ambition to contend for top honors this season. With two significant fixtures coming up—an upcoming quarterfinal clash against Piast Gliwice and then against Lech Poznań—Pogoń appears poised for continued success.

The next match will be pivotal for Widzew, as they seek to salvage their season and avoid the fears of relegation. Meanwhile, Pogoń will look to capitalize on this momentum as they prepare for their upcoming challenges.
