Coronation Street Stars Reunite For Dramatic ITV Series Protection

The new show explores the highs and lows of witness protection alongside personal turmoil.

Two former stars of the iconic soap opera Coronation Street, Catherine Tyldesley and Katherine Kelly, have reunited on screen for ITV's gripping new drama, Protection, which aired its first episode on March 16, 2025. The show brings together characters, plots, and personal dynamics, showcasing the intricacies of police work against the backdrop of witness protection.

The series stars Siobhan Finneran, known for her roles in Happy Valley and Downton Abbey, as Detective Inspector Liz Nyles. Liz is tasked with overseeing the witness protection program, ensuring the safety of those who are under threat due to their testimony against criminals. With approximately 3,000 people benefiting from the UK witness protection scheme at any time, Liz's role carries the absolute weight of responsibility. Yet, as the story unravels, she finds herself embroiled not only in the professional challenges of her job but also personal entanglements.

At the same time, Katherine Kelly plays DCI Hannah Wheatley, whose work parallels Liz's and becomes embroiled with issues of corruption within their unit. "I've worked with Siobhan on quite a few things, she's a friend and it's really nice to spend time with her on and off screen. This is the most we've actually appeared on screen together, so we picked up where we left off," Kelly remarked. This statement reflects the strong working relationship and camaraderie the two enjoyed, even as they navigated complex narratives on the show.

Meanwhile, Tyldesley, who is best remembered for her role as Eva Price on Coronation Street, has a cameo in Protection. During her appearance, she hints at her character's possible return to the cobbled streets of Weatherfield. Last year, she tantalizingly commented, "Eva's making a comeback—everyone thought the same! But never say never. It was just lovely to see everybody" during her appearance on Good Morning Britain.

The show's opening scene is gripping; it sees 12-year-old Amy McLennan, played by Tilly Kaye, witnessing the brutal murder of her parents, who are living under protection from drug dealer Eddie Crowther. This shocking turn of events sets the stage for the exploration of trust and betrayal within the ranks of law enforcement. Barry Ward portrays DS Paul Brandice, who is involved with Liz both professionally and personally, leading to questions about loyalties and motives.

Kelly delved deep for her portrayal of Hannah Wheatley, spending time with the Merseyside Police to gain insights. "I had played a similar role in Happy Valley a decade ago, and I felt policing had changed so much in this time, so I wanted a refresher course. I was welcomed with open arms. They gave me a crash course on everything—what weapons you’d use when arriving at a major incident, how careful you have to be with the flow of information, and how much being a detective is now about the use of technology like phones and CCTV," she explained.

Alongside Finneran, Kelly, and Tyldesley, Protection boasts a talented ensemble cast including Nadine Marshall as DCI Amanda Kelman, Akiya Henry as DS Sue Beardsley, and Chaneil Kular, adding depth to the police drama narrative. With each character facing their own internal and external battles, the storytelling promises to explore not only crime investigations but also the ethical dilemmas faced by police officers.

With all episodes available on ITVX, Protection positions itself as both timely and engaging, weaving together personal and professional conflicts within the framework of riveting crime drama. On the surface, it offers thrilling entertainment but also raises underlying questions of morality and accountability within the law enforcement system.

Television viewers and fans of police dramas are encouraged to tune in and engage with the very human stories portrayed by the talented cast, who collectively make Protection much more than just another detective series. The potent mix of suspense and relational dynamics drives the narrative to well-crafted heights, promising audiences a gripping viewing experience.
