Copa Libertadores 2025 Nears Final Team Lineup

With 43 of 45 teams confirmed, anticipation builds for the prestigious tournament's kick-off.

The Copa Libertadores 2025 is set to kick off with excitement as 43 of the 45 spots are already filled, leaving only two coveted slots for teams eager to join one of South America's premier football competitions. This year's tournament will see fierce competition not only from long-standing giants but also from underdogs across the continent.

With the preliminary rounds slated to begin early February, anticipation is building among fans and players alike. The competition will follow its traditional format, starting with the early phases before moving to the highly anticipated group stage. The final qualifications will be wrapped up by March, ensuring all teams have their passports stamped for the continental showdown.

The Brazilian league has contributed significantly to the lineup for the upcoming tournament. Botafogo, crowned champions of the 2024 Copa Libertadores, and Flamengo, winners of the Copa do Brasil, have both secured their places, opening two additional spots due to their success and inclusion among the top six teams—collectively known as the G6—of the Brasileirão. This results in the formation of what is referred to as the G8 for next season's Libertadores. The six best teams will advance directly to the group stage, whereas the seventh and eighth teams will have to navigate the initial rounds.

Confirmed teams from Brazil include: Botafogo, Palmeiras, Flamengo, Fortaleza, Internacional, São Paulo, Corinthians, and Bahia. Among these, six are guaranteed spots in the group stage, with only Corinthians and Bahia facing the prospects of battling through the preliminary rounds. This highlights the fierce national competition, as Brazilian clubs dominate the tournament's lineup.

Argentina follows closely as the second-highest contributor to the tournament with seven teams. Clubs secured from this football powerhouse include Racing, Estudiantes, Central Córdoba, Vélez, Talleres, River Plate, and Boca Juniors. Collectively, these clubs represent some of the most storied traditions and rivalries within Latin American football.

Meanwhile, other South American nations will have fewer representatives, typically four apiece: Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela. Notably, teams from Bolivia such as San Antonio Bulo Bulo, Bolívar, and The Strongest have already made the cut, highlighting the competition's diversity.

Next on the agenda are the final vacancies, which will be filled through the culminating matches of the 2024 Bolivian and Colombian leagues. One remaining spot will go to the sixth place finisher of the Campeonato Boliviano Clausura, with potential candidates including Clb Gualberto Villaroel, Nacional Potosí, Aurora, Always Ready, Blooming, Jorge Wistermann, or Real Tomayapo. The final decision will occur on Saturday, January 21, when the last round wraps up. The second vacancy is up for grabs, depending on the outcome of the Colombian league finals, which currently sees Deportivo Tolima squaring off against Atlético Nacional de Medellín, with the second leg happening on Sunday, January 22.

The positioning of seeded teams greatly influences the group stage draws, and out of Brazil's participating teams, four will not hold the advantageous seeded status: Bahia, Corinthians, Fortaleza, and Internacional. Conversely, Botafogo, Palmeiras, Flamengo, and São Paulo will lead their respective groups as heads of the pots during the draw, thanks to their high placements on the Conmebol Club Ranking.

Botafogo stands out as it may hold the 21st position on the ranking yet gains seeded status by virtue of its victory last season. Conversely, the other Brazilian clubs feature prominently within the top rankings, landing them the coveted seedings.

Fans are eager for the upcoming tournament, which promises thrilling matchups and intense competition across the continent as teams aim for the prestigious Copa Libertadores title. Beyond the competition lies the passionate support of fans who bring the stadiums alive, creating an electrifying atmosphere throughout the tournament.

The excitement surrounding the Copa Libertadores 2025 is palpable, showing no signs of waning as two final teams vie for their spots. With the tournament approaching, South America's biggest football clubs are preparing to battle for glory, legacy, and the revered trophy.
