Community Mourns Ilaria Sula Following Brutal Femicide

As investigations continue, calls for justice grow louder in Terni after the tragic death of a young student.

The tragic femicide of Ilaria Sula, a 22-year-old student brutally killed by her ex-boyfriend Mark Antony Samson, has sent ripples of grief and outrage through the community. As the investigation unfolds, new details emerge about the circumstances surrounding the crime, the role of Samson's family, and the public's response to this heartbreaking loss.

Ilaria Sula, who was studying statistics at La Sapienza University in Rome, was reported missing on March 25, 2025. Her body was discovered on April 2, 2025, hidden in a suitcase at the bottom of a ravine near the Municipality of Poli, about 30 kilometers east of Rome. This discovery came after a frantic search initiated by her friends and family, who had raised alarms about her sudden disappearance.

Mark Antony Samson, 23, confessed to killing Ilaria out of jealousy, claiming he stabbed her three times in the neck during an altercation at his home. He stated that after the murder, he wrapped her body in a double black bag, placed it in a suitcase, and then attempted to clean up the bloodstains in his room. Investigators, however, are skeptical about the timeline and details of his confession, suggesting that the actions he described may not have been possible without assistance.

During a four-hour interrogation, Samson's mother, Nors Manlapaz, confessed to helping her son clean the crime scene. She is now under investigation for aiding in the concealment of a corpse, which has raised significant concerns among investigators. According to her lawyer, the family is devastated and seeking forgiveness for the events that transpired.

The Mayor of Terni, Stefano Bandecchi, expressed his outrage during Ilaria's funeral, which took place on April 7, 2025. The funeral procession, attended by around 3,000 mourners, began at the family home in Viale dello Stadio and concluded at the city cemetery. Attendees released white and red balloons into the sky as a tribute to Ilaria. Bandecchi called for life imprisonment for her killer, stating, "I don’t even want to imagine the pain of this girl’s family, victim of yet another femicide at the hands of a devil, a man unworthy of being called that."

The investigation into the events surrounding Ilaria's death continues. Authorities are scrutinizing the involvement of Samson's parents, particularly focusing on the mother's actions during and after the murder. Her initial statements were deemed incomplete and unconvincing, leading to suspicions that she may have assisted her son in disposing of the body.

Samson's defense team is considering a psychiatric assessment for him, aiming to argue that he was incapable of understanding his actions at the time of the crime. During his interrogation, he claimed, “I killed her out of jealousy, but I loved her. I had a sudden fit.” However, investigators believe there is evidence of premeditation, as they are examining phone records and other details that could contradict his account.

In the wake of Ilaria's death, La Sapienza University suspended classes on the day of her funeral and flew flags at half-mast to honor her memory. Rector Antonella Polimeni emphasized the need for reflection on the issue of violence against women, a sentiment echoed by many during the funeral proceedings.

As the investigation progresses, it is clear that this case highlights the broader societal issue of femicide and violence against women. Ilaria's family, particularly her father Flamur, has called for justice, stating, "He must rot in jail," while her brother Leon described her as "a girl of gold," underscoring the profound loss felt by those who knew her.

With public outcry growing, the Rome Prosecutor's Office is expected to evaluate whether to charge Samson with additional aggravating circumstances, such as premeditation and cruelty. The community's response has been one of solidarity and mourning, as many come together to demand justice for Ilaria and to raise awareness about the urgent need to address violence against women.

The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities continuing to gather evidence and testimonies. The hope is that through this tragedy, a greater conversation about prevention and accountability can emerge, ensuring that Ilaria Sula's death is not in vain.
