The festive spirit was alive and well across communities this holiday season, with numerous events taking place on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. From charity initiatives to local races, residents embraced the season of giving and communal celebrations.
One standout event was organized by Surviving Christmas, a charity dedicated to supporting the elderly, homeless, and those in need during the festive season. Based at His Place on Robertson Street, the charity packed and distributed around 850 hampers and nearly 1,000 toys to the most vulnerable individuals and families locally. The two-day Christmas event featured not only the distribution of gifts but also entertainment, services from local hairdressers, and visits from medical and mental health professionals.
"We have delivered about 850 hampers, along with almost 1,000 toys, to families and individuals locally. It’s been a mammoth task, with far too many people to thank individually, but we need to say the hugest thank you ever to Battle Abbey School, who hosted us this year," remarked Sue Peck, chair of Surviving Christmas. "The school couldn’t have been more welcoming - nothing was too much trouble for them." The charity, which has been operational for over 30 years, relies on community fundraising efforts to support its projects, especially during the busy holiday season.
Meanwhile, the Boxing Day sales proved to be another highlight of the season, with early morning shoppers flocking to stores, particularly in Birmingham. Footage captured long queues outside popular shops like Lush on New Street, as eager consumers aimed to nab discounts on their post-Christmas shopping spree. For many, the opportunity to save after the festive rush is something they eagerly anticipate every year.
Alongside these shopping festivities, local residents participated enthusiastically in the annual Boxing Day beer race, held on December 26 at 1 PM, where participants raised funds for Breast Cancer Now. The quirky fundraiser began as a fun tradition started by Ray Gower back in 2015 and has since blossomed. Participants enjoy the challenge of running with pints of beer along lanes dressed up for the occasion.
Ray expressed satisfaction on his JustGiving page, stating, "What a brilliant day. Thank you so much to everyone involved." Although this event was slightly more irreverent compared to others, it united the community under the shared purpose of supporting a worthy cause. Participants enjoyed camaraderie and laughter, all for the benefit of charity.
Overall, this holiday season showcased the spirit of community, charity, and togetherness, reminding everyone of the joys of giving and gathering. Whether through supporting those less fortunate or racing with beer for fun, locals embraced the holiday spirit wholeheartedly. Events like these not only serve as entertaining pastimes but also highlight the strength and solidarity of community efforts, reinforcing the importance of togetherness during this festive season.
