Communities Celebrate Saint Vincent With Rich Traditions

From communal meals to festive gatherings, locals honor their wine heritage during annual festivities.

The vibrant celebrations of Saint Vincent across various locales underline the rich traditions inherent to local winemaking communities. Marking significant social gatherings, the festivities encapsulate both reverence for the patron saint of winegrowers and the endurance of cultural practices.

On February 1, 2025, the Commanderie des Maîtres Vignerons du Frontonnais will host its annual chapter of intronization at the church of Fronton after the 10:30 AM mass. This year's event is particularly special as it also commemorates the 50th anniversary of the AOP Fronton. Various confréries will gather for the ceremony, which honors Saint Vincent, showcasing the town's historical and cultural connection to viticulture. Following the mass, attendees can enjoy a wine reception, made possible through the participation of local winemakers, set to take place under the market hall of Fronton.

This festive occasion will also feature animated festivities including the traditional procession of confréries through the town. The community is invited to partake in the lunch arranged by the Commanderie at the Gérard Philipe community hall, priced at 60€ per person upon reservation. An email confirmation is required for attendance, which can be sent to [email protected]. This event promises to unite community members and wine enthusiasts alike, celebrating the heritage and pride of local viticulture.

Meanwhile, on the same weekend, Thoiré-sur-Dinan will celebrate Saint Vincent with its community dinner at the restaurant "Le Dinan" on Saturday. This event's radiance is echoed by the local customs surrounding the village’s wine history, including the notable presentation of the village's municipal wine barrel. Established by Gabriel Guyon, the barrel has been preserved as part of the village's unique heritage, marked with the inscription: “À Saint-Gabriel, cave municipale qui ne sera jamais, ni louée, ni vendue.” The communal atmosphere is anticipated as more than 80 residents join to honor their local traditions.

Notably, Lucet Givran, the president, will showcase the now-legendary wooden cane topped with vine shoots, originally crafted by past president Sébastien Cadieu. This item holds names of past elected officials from the village, connecting the present to the past, and reinforcing the bond between the winegrowers and the agricultural legacy of the community. Jacques Chollet, one of the remaining vineyard caretakers, highlights the few remaining hectares of vineyards producing pineau d’aunis and chenin, signifying the historical significance of these varietals within the commune.

The experience broadens to include local traditions, with Tyrosse's events scheduled for January 25, which are deeply ingrained within the region’s cultural fabric. Although the tradition of dancing at the hall has faded, new festivities are introduced, including market stalls and alcohol tastings by local producers, starting from 9 AM. A relay race encourages playfulness and community interaction, occurring before lunch at the popular Foirail square.

The team behind Tyrosse Fêtes et animations promises entertainment with diverse offerings: from varied activities like treasure hunts aimed at engaging families and promoting communal spirit, to dining options supplemented by local caterers, demonstrating the enthusiasm for community togetherness.

The day will be free from pretension, nurturing local traditions and fostering a spirit of hospitality. It perfectly aligns with the village's identity—an alluring celebration of wine, laughter, and camaraderie.

Each event stands as testimony to the community’s commitment to honor their roots and the significance of Saint Vincent as the protector of vineyards. This year’s celebrations are set to be not only festive occasions but also reflections of cultural pride, legacy, and unity among winemakers and residents, ensuring the vibrancy of such traditions continues for years to come.
