NVIDIA Set To Launch GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs

The new graphics cards promise significant performance gains over their predecessors but face supply and pricing challenges.

NVIDIA is poised to debut its latest graphics cards, the GeForce RTX 50 series, which includes the flagship RTX 5090 and the slightly lower-tier RTX 5080. Launching on January 30, 2025, this series has generated significant anticipation not only for its functionality but also for its performance benchmarks compared to the previous generation RTX 4090.

Recent tests conducted across the 3DMark benchmark suite have showcased impressive results, with the RTX 5090 showing potential performance enhancements up to 53% over the RTX 4090. Not only are water-cooled models stirring interest, but significant strides are also made concerning the design and safety measures of power connectors. NVIDIA has integrated enhancements to the 12VHPWR connector, noting the past issues with melting connectors. MSI, for example, is taking extra precautions with vibrant color indicators to help users confirm if their connection is secure.

Despite the exhilarating performance gains showcased through benchmarking, experts urge gamers to remain cautious about the level of performance they can expect from these cards once released. With high expectations due to NVIDIA’s historical performance trends, there remains uncertainty around how effectively the latest hardware will optimize current gaming engines and workloads.
