It wasn't until last year, with renewed vigour and advanced genetic techniques, the cold case was reopened by the Ozaukee County Sheriff's Office, leading to pivotal revelations about his identity and the circumstances surrounding his death.
Chester's identity was confirmed via DNA testing, which revealed he had been adopted by William and Hilja Jutila, who moved from Michigan to Chicago. The couple faced scrutiny when family members questioned Chester's whereabouts after noticing signs of neglect and abuse. Although Hilja confessed to beating her son to death, charges against them were dismissed due to lack of evidence tying the skeleton to the Jutilas.
Fast forward to 2023, where detectives utilizing new genetic genealogy tools were able to identify Chester's remains after decades of mystery, sparking hope for justice and closure. Chester’s story is particularly grim; investigators noted he suffered significant abuse and neglect, indicative of the severe trauma he endured under the care of his adoptive parents.
