The holiday season is upon us, and what could be more enchanting than taking a trip on one of the many festive trains rolling across the country? From California’s coastline to the snowy plains of the Midwest, holiday-themed train rides have become cherished traditions for families eager to soak up the magic of the season.
One of the standout celebrations is the COASTER Holiday Express, which has returned for another round of heartwarming rides from the North County Transit District (NCTD). This year, passengers are treated to a visually festive experience complete with holiday carols, opportunities to meet Santa, and even write letters to the big man himself. The Holiday Express offers a scenic 60-minute round trip along the beautiful San Diego County coastline, departing from the Oceanside Transit Center and heading to Solana Beach. The program runs from December 7 through December 15, featuring 13 departures over two weekends, including three daily trips. Each ticket is priced at $20, with children under two riding for free.
“It’s delightful to ride along the coast and share the joys of the season with families,” said Amber Coakley for FOX 5 San Diego. “Songs, decorations, and Santa make every ride memorable.” Riders can expect to be serenaded by carolers, making the experience not just scenic but also sonorous.
Meanwhile, east of California, Metrolink is reviving its beloved Holiday Express Train this season, promising even more family-favorite festivities. Kicking off Thanksgiving weekend, this train service will cover five routes and make ten trips through various counties. Each ticket begins at $25, and the capacity fills up fast, so families planning to hop aboard are urged to secure their spots early. With Santa, festive decorations, and sweet treats aboard, Metrolink is pushing to make this year’s experience as cozy and cheerful as possible.
“We’ve heard so many great stories from families who come ride with us, and it’s exciting to announce the return of such a high-demand event,” said the Metrolink spokesperson. The train will operate through December 21, providing ample opportunity for families to revel together during this enchanting time of year.
Across the Midwest, the cherished Polar Express Train Ride at Chehalis-Centralia Railroad and Museum has kicked off its 14th season, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of the film directed by Robert Zemeckis. The magic of the ride is embodied by golden tickets handed out to eager children and families at the beautifully decorated depot. Passengers will enjoy hot chocolate, cookies, and the company of Santa Claus himself, who greets each family and hands them the first gift of Christmas—a silver bell.
Mary Kay Nelson, CCR&M president, expressed joy over the event's increasing popularity: “This has become such an incredible way to celebrate the holidays, and we’ve continued to add new elements to make it even more special for our visitors.” This year features new songs and characters, enhancing the rollercoaster of childhood nostalgia and excitement on this magical trip to the North Pole—located, as always, near Adna.
Families lucky enough to snag tickets for the Polar Express may have to act fast; as of recent reports, seats are nearly sold out. Tickets were made available back in September, and demand remains high—an indication of the enduring popularity of this holiday tradition.
Further enhancing holiday excitement, St. Louis Union Station welcomes back its engaging Polar Express experience, featuring new attractions this holiday season. Families visiting can look forward to interacting with beloved characters, the magical setting, and tasting seasonal treats throughout the station. New this year is Mrs. Claus's Kitchen, where children can decorate cookies and enjoy storytime. Adults can sip on holiday-themed beverages at the rebranded Elf Bar, offering both alcoholic and non-alcoholic options under sparkly lights.
“All these new additions amplify the festive spirit here,” said the event coordinator. “Families should mark their calendars to make lasting holiday memories.” The Polar Express train experience at Union Station commemorates 20 years of joy for children riding to the North Pole, indulging them with holiday treats and cherished photo opportunities. The season runs from November 15 to December 30, with tickets available through their website.
Whether it’s meeting Santa, indulging in delectable snacks, or immersing themselves in the holiday spirit, families engaging with these festive train rides are bound to create unforgettable memories. The trains not only connect holiday cheer with the charm of rail travel but also provide families with unique opportunities to celebrate the season together.
All across America, festive trains are rolling, breathing life and warmth to the holidays, making each trip feel like just as much of magic as the stories themselves.
