Coca-Cola Faces Multiple Product Recalls Over Safety Concerns

Recent contamination issues in the U.S. and U.K. prompt recalls affecting thousands of cans across various products.

Coca-Cola has found itself at the center of multiple recalls recently, raising concerns among consumers regarding the safety of their products. On March 25, 2025, Coca-Cola announced a recall of over 10,000 cans of its Original Coca-Cola due to contamination risks linked to plastic. This particular recall, classified as a Class II recall by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), affects 864 12-packs of 12-ounce cans produced by Reyes Coca-Cola Bottling, LLC in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
These products, mainly distributed in Wisconsin and Illinois, may pose a health risk, although the FDA reassured that the risk of severe illness is low. However, temporary or medically reversible health effects are possible for consumers who may ingest these contaminants.

“The contamination does not typically cause serious issues, but it is essential for consumers to check their batch numbers and avoid affected products,” noted the FDA in its announcement.

In a parallel situation, Coca-Cola European Partners (CCEP) has initiated another recall in the U.K. involving two imported batches of 6x250ml Appletiser multipacks, and a small amount of imported cans of Coca-Cola, Coca-Cola Zero Sugar, Diet Coke, and Sprite Zero. These products may contain elevated levels of chlorate, posing a food safety risk, particularly to those with sensitivities to chlorate or individuals with pre-existing iodine deficiencies.

CCEP stated that the affected Coca-Cola variants include drinks sold in taller can formats that were distributed to cafes and restaurants across the U.K. for a limited time. The impacted products carry best before dates of November 30, 2025, and May 31, 2025, and feature specific production codes ranging from 328 GE to 338 GE. The Appletiser multipacks affected have best before dates of November 30 and December 31 in 2025.

Reflecting on the situation, CCEP issued a statement saying, “The quality and safety of our products is our top priority, and we’re sorry that on this occasion, a small number of our products have not met our high standards, and we apologize for any inconvenience this has caused.”

Tina Potter, head of incidents at the U.K. Food Standards Agency (FSA), confirmed that while the identified risk levels are low based on assessments conducted, adverse health effects cannot be ruled out for those who are particularly sensitive to chlorate. “The safety of the public is paramount,” Potter added, emphasizing the importance of consumer awareness in these matters.

The situation worsens as another item, a batch of Rude Health branded chocolate granola, has also been recalled due to possible insect contamination. This news further complicates the landscape for food safety in the U.K. market.
