Chunichi Dragons Kick Off 2025 Season With High Hopes

Team faces challenges with injuries as they aim for a comeback

On March 28, 2025, the Chunichi Dragons kicked off their season with high hopes under new manager Kazuki Inoue. The team, rallying around the slogan 'DraPosi', is determined to make a strong comeback after three consecutive last-place finishes in the Central League. With aspirations for a playoff spot and their first league championship in 14 years, the Dragons are ready to face the challenges ahead.

However, the season opener against DeNA in Yokohama brings significant hurdles. Key player Fukunaga Yuto, who was expected to be a cornerstone of the lineup, is sidelined due to a right knee injury suffered during an open game against SoftBank on March 18. Diagnosed with a medial collateral ligament injury, Fukunaga is anticipated to be out for 2 to 3 months, leaving a considerable gap in the infield.

Adding to the team's woes, new foreign recruit Jason Vosler has been absent from practice since March 2 due to issues with his upper body condition. His absence means the Dragons will have to rely heavily on their utility players to fill the void. Orland Calixte, Yuta Itayama, and Taisei Yamamoto are expected to step up in this challenging situation, showcasing their versatility across multiple positions.

"Even if individual strengths may not match up to other teams, we believe that collectively we can overcome these obstacles," said Inoue, instilling a sense of unity and determination within the squad.

As the Dragons prepare to navigate this season, the competition for positions is heating up. The starting lineup has been announced, with four positions fixed: Right fielder Naruto Hosokawa, Center fielder Yuki Okabayashi, Shortstop Kaito Muramatsu, and Third baseman Akinobu Ishikawa. The remaining spots, including catcher, first base, second base, and left field, will be fluid, allowing for adjustments based on player performance and matchups.

Inoue has opted to start veteran Hayato Nakata at first base, batting sixth. Despite a challenging open season where he posted a batting average of just .111, Nakata's experience is seen as invaluable as the team seeks to find its rhythm early in the season.

The Dragons' opening day lineup is as follows:

  • 1. Yuki Okabayashi (CF)
  • 2. Yamamoto (2B)
  • 3. Calixte (LF)
  • 4. Akinobu Ishikawa (3B)
  • 5. Naruto Hosokawa (RF)
  • 6. Hayato Nakata (1B)
  • 7. Muramatsu (SS)
  • 8. Kinoshita (C)
  • 9. Takahashi Hiroto (P)

Across the field, DeNA has also announced its starting lineup, featuring a mix of seasoned players and promising talent. The matchup is set to be an exciting one, as both teams are eager to make a statement at the beginning of the season.

In a broader context, the Chunichi Dragons are celebrating 30 years of spring training in Kitaya Town, Okinawa Prefecture. This milestone marks a significant chapter in the team's history, having first arrived in 1995 when the area lacked accommodations and restaurants. The decision made by then-manager Senichi Hoshino and team executives has since transformed Kitaya into a vibrant baseball hub.

Mayor Seiji Watakuzuchi expressed his hopes for the upcoming season, emphasizing the importance of the Dragons to the local community. "The Dragons have elevated the recognition of Kitaya, and we are excited to support them as they aim for the championship this year," he stated.

During the recent training camp, a player suffered a collision with the outfield fence at AGRES Stadium Kitaya, leading to a hospital visit. Thankfully, the player was not seriously injured. In response, the town plans to enhance safety measures by replacing the rubber on the fence before the next spring training.

Looking ahead, the town is also discussing plans for a parade in Kitaya if the Dragons achieve success in the Central League, along with a designated Kitaya Day during the season to involve the community in the festivities.

As the season unfolds, the Chunichi Dragons are poised to face their challenges head-on, with a mix of young talent and experienced players ready to battle for victory. The excitement is palpable as fans and players alike hope for a turnaround from the previous seasons.

With the opening game against DeNA just beginning, the Dragons aim to set the tone for their season. Can they rise to the occasion and make a mark in the league? Only time will tell, but the stage is set for an exhilarating start to the 2025 season.
