On March 13, 2025, during the fifth day of the Grand Sumo Spring Tournament at Edion Arena, Osaka, Maegashira 2 Chiyoshoma scored a significant victory by defeating new Yokozuna Hoshoryu with a yorikiri, marking his first kinboshi.
Chiyoshoma, age 33, expressed delight after the match, stating, "I’m happy! I decided on my approach during this morning’s practice. This was the only way to fight." This victory was no small feat, especially for the Yokozuna, who faced his second loss after promotion, having only recently ascended to the highest rank.
His triumph at 33 years, 7 months, and 21 days also sets him apart as the second oldest wrestler to achieve kinboshi since the implementation of the six-tournament system commenced back in 1958. Following the bout, Chiyoshoma maintained his record of three wins against two losses, putting him on solid ground for the remainder of the tournament.
Chiyoshoma’s stablemaster, Kokonoe Oyakata, formerly known as Ozeki Chiyotaikai, celebrated this milestone achievement, remarking, "It’s incredible! He has been training hard; working out with younger wrestlers keeps him feeling young." This consistent effort and commitment to training have evidently kept his spirit lively and competitive.
During the day’s other matches, Ozeki Daonoshou secured his fourth win by defeating Takanosho, showcasing his strong performance. Meanwhile, Komusubi Kirishima was not as fortunate, falling to Takayasu, leading to his record dropping to two wins against three losses.
Additively, on the same slate, Sekiwake Hoshoryu managed to bounce back from defeat to take down Wakamotoharu, pushing his tally to three wins. The newly promoted Sekiwake Osho also claimed victory against Komusubi Abi, leaving him with two wins to his name as well.
With this day's events, all undefeated records were shattered, leaving several wrestlers with only one loss, including Daonoshou and high-ranking Maegashira wrestlers like Takayasu, Hakuyozan, Tsurugisho, Aminishiki, Shishi, and Minonoumi.
Chiyoshoma's win not only elevates his standing within the tournament but anticipates what can be expected from him going forward. His determination is clear as he stated, "I will concentrate on every single match from here on out." His future outings will be watched with much interest, particularly as he strives to maintain his performance level through this prestigious tournament.
