Wisconsin's culinary preferences have taken center stage with new research indicating the most popular cuisines among residents. A study conducted by the social casino website Hello Millions has identified Chinese cuisine as the favorite, followed closely by Mexican and Indian fare.
The study analyzed Google search data over the past 12 months, measuring terms associated with various cuisines such as "Italian restaurants," "Thai food," and "Jamaican cuisine". By dividing the average monthly searches by state population, researchers painted a clearer picture of what residents are craving.
Chinese cuisine topped the list for Wisconsin, boasting an impressive average of 345.6 Google searches per month per 100,000 people. This cuisine has long been embraced by Americans, with staples like rice, soy sauce, and noodles becoming commonplace. Signature dishes—Peking duck, sweet and sour pork, dim sum, and chow mein—are beloved across the Badger State.
Following closely behind was Mexican cuisine, which commanded 214.52 average searches per 100,000 people. Renowned for its bold flavors and comforting dishes, Mexican cuisine—featuring tacos, burritos, enchiladas, and fajitas—has captured hearts and stomachs nationwide.
The third most-searched cuisine was Indian, generating 190.03 searches per 100,000 individuals. Famous for its vibrant spices and flavors, Indian food thrives on dishes like chicken tikka masala, butter chicken, and vindaloo. Italian cuisine was fourth, with 176.1 monthly searches, and many Wisconsinites enjoy classics like pizza and lasagna.
Thailand's enticing flavors also made the cut, landing the fifth spot with 115.0 average searches per 100,000 people. Dishes such as pad Thai and Thai green curry have gained traction over the years, indicative of broader culinary trends.
On a national scale, Chinese cuisine leads the pack with approximately 1.69 million Google searches each month, affirming its status as the favorite cuisine across various states. Mexican cuisine ranks second overall, generating around 977,758 searches, with different states showcasing unique preferences.
A spokesperson for Hello Millions commented on the findings, noting, "The popularity of many cuisines has risen significantly...reflecting the country’s increasing cultural diversity as well as the impact of globalization." They pointed out how American culinary trends are influenced by immigration and explorations of global flavors.
Indeed, the past few decades have seen American palates broadened, allowing cuisines from every corner of the globe to settle comfortably on dining tables across the country. The study emphasized, “Asian cuisines reign supreme...taking up three of the top five spots, and half of the top 10 spots overall.”
