Chicago Rings In 2025 With Frigid Temperatures And Snow

After mild weather for the holidays, winter makes its presence felt with cold, snow, and wind chills.

After an unseasonably mild end to 2024, the Chicago area is welcoming 2025 with much colder weather, mirroring winter's typical chill rather than the unexpectedly warm December enjoyed by many. Temperatures dipped below freezing on New Year’s Eve, leaving residents bracing for gusty winds and wind chills plunging to the upper teens.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), New Year’s Eve started with rain, gradually transitioning to light snow as temperatures remained above freezing but would begin to plummet by midnight. "Gusty winds will send wind chills to the upper teens," warned Gino Izzi, meteorologist at NWS, as celebrants prepared for midnight festivities.

Along with the dramatic weather shift, forecasters predicted light flurries for New Year’s Day, with high temperatures hovering just above 30°F, but the cold spell is expected to tighten its grip on the area thereafter. “Much colder as we head to the first weekend of 2025, with highs in the low 20s,” said NBC 5 Meteorologist Iisha Scott.

Celebrators wishing to ring in the New Year outdoors faced challenges with various weather conditions throughout the day. Rain showers dominated the morning alongside overcast skies, contributing to damp outdoor celebrations, particularly for events like the NHL Winter Classic at Wrigley Field. Still, the rain was expected to mix with snow, leading to slippery conditions later at night.

Temperatures oscillated throughout the day, reaching highs of approximately 40°F, before taking a sharp turn downward as night fell. Northern Illinois experienced similar effects of the impending Arctic air, as meteorologists noted concerns over icy patches developing from rainfall freezing overnight.

Heading beyond New Year’s Day, forecasters indicated cold weather would continue to blanket the region. “An Arctic Outbreak will lead to colder temperatures for the first half of January for much of the U.S., including the Chicago area,” explained Accuweather meteorologist Kerry Schwindenhammer. Cold, dry conditions with scattered flurries are anticipated, particularly through the weekend.

The weekend forecast shows temperatures dipping significantly, presenting highs only reaching the 20s, along with lows plummeting to between 10°F and 15°F. This marked decrease signals the clear arrival of winter, making it all the more important for residents to bundle up and prepare for what this season holds.

There’s also continued speculation about the potential for snow systems affecting the region next week. Although initial models predicted the storm to pass by south of Chicago, meteorologists urged residents to stay alert as any change could influence Chicago’s weather directly, bringing more substantial snow and colder temperatures if conditions align neutrally.

Waking up to winter conditions after festive celebrations presents its own challenges, but the commitment to safety remains high. "Strong winds will make temperatures feel more like the teens when the ball drops," reassured Iisha Scott, emphasizing the importance of preparedness for those venturing outdoors during the frigid spell.

Overall, as Chicago winds down another year, the unexpected weather patterns highlight the unpredictable nature of climate and how quickly circumstances can evolve. For many, it serves as both reminder and reality check for the wintry months to come, encouraging strategies for warmth and safety.
