Chhaava Surges Past Rs 760 Crore Worldwide At Box Office

The film's historical narrative strikes a chord amid social tensions, drawing audiences and sparking dialogue.

Vicky Kaushal and Rashmika Mandanna's Film Chhaava Collects Over Rs 760 Crore Globally

The film has been a cultural phenomenon, captivating audiences and breaking box-office records with its extraordinary receipts.

In an impressive display of box office prowess, the film Chhaava, featuring Vicky Kaushal and Rashmika Mandanna, has ascended to a remarkable Rs 764 crore in global earnings, as reported on March 18, 2025. Based on the historical figure Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the movie has not only resonated with audiences but has also sparked significant conversations about Indian history and identity.

Director Laxman Utekar's film has been heating up the box office since its release, marking its 33rd day in theaters. According to data from the trade tracking portal Sacnilk, Chhaava has managed to rake in an astounding Rs 673.9 crore domestically, alongside Rs 90.1 crore from international markets. The film's incredible success is attributed in part to its engaging storytelling and powerful performances.

Box office collections were strong from the start, with Chhaava earning Rs 219.95 crore during its opening week. It steadily built on that success, raking in Rs 180.25 crore in its second week, followed by Rs 84.05 crore in its third week, and culminating in Rs 55.95 crore during the fourth week. In its fifth weekend, the film grossed an additional Rs 23.15 crore, and as of March 19, it collected Rs 5.15 crore on Monday and Tuesday.

The film’s popularity comes at a time when Maharashtra has seen heightened tensions. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis remarked on March 18, indicating that Chhaava has stirred emotions regarding historical narratives, particularly reminding audiences of the controversial legacy of Aurangzeb. This context has amplified discussions surrounding the film, leading to protests by right-wing groups advocating for the removal of Aurangzeb’s tomb from Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar.

Chhaava is not only a win for its lead actors but also a significant milestone for Indian cinema. For Vicky Kaushal, it has become his highest-grossing film. Rashmika Mandanna's role as Maharani Yesubai also marks her second biggest success after Pushpa 2: The Rule of Thumb.

The film's impressive soundtrack, composed by the renowned A.R. Rahman, adds another layer of allure, enhancing the film's historical narrative with an engaging musical backdrop that resonates with audiences.

As the first major hit in Hindi cinema for 2025, Chhaava's success comes in contrast to a slow start for the year, suggesting that it may herald a turning point for the Indian film industry as it anticipates several significant releases in the coming months.

Following Chhaava, the political thriller The Diplomat starring John Abraham has also premiered, amassing Rs 16.2 crore at the domestic box office in its first five days. However, it remains to be seen if it can replicate the massive success that Chhaava has achieved.

Overall, Chhaava’s performance highlights a growing appetite for films that echo Indian history while discussing relevant socio-political issues. The film's triumph serves as a testament to the audience's appreciation for engaging narratives that resonate deeply with contemporary viewers.

As 2025 unfolds, the Indian film landscape seems poised for a resurgence, with Chhaava leading the charge.
