This St. Patrick's Day was filled with lively celebrations, embracing Irish culture through food, drink, and community gatherings across various locations. March 17, 2025, saw more than just parades and parties; it was also about honoring the rich heritage of Ireland.
At Sean Finnegan's Irish Pub, visitors could indulge in what locals are calling "Sacramento's Best Irish Coffee." The pub was just one of many establishments along the Old Sacramento Waterfront participating in the month's special “Taste of Ireland” celebration, which features Irish-inspired foods and beverages. Among the corned beef dishes and traditional beverages, the café scene transformed to reflect the spirit of the holiday.
Meanwhile, the Guinness Open Gate Brewery was alive with excitement, hosting its annual Irish Village celebration. For six years now, this location has created a space for guests to enjoy traditional Irish music, food, and, of course, beer. Todd Perkins, the head brewer at the brewery, noted the significance of the event, stating, "We try to do it bigger and ... be part of these festivities is amazing." The brewery not only offered the classic Guinness but also created an assortment of themed vendors and experiences for attendees.
"It makes me feel amazing like we put ... everybody is Irish on St. Patrick's Day right," Perkins added, highlighting the community spirit felt during these celebrations.
While locals enjoyed the festivities, other events were occurring, such as the St. Patrick's Day parade and celebrations in Dublin, marking the day with vibrant displays of tradition and pride. Unfortunately, not all events related to St. Patrick's Day festivities were celebratory. On the same weekend, legal issues surrounding the Trump Administration brought focus to other urgent matters, including the deportation of individuals like the Brown University doctor who was sent back to Lebanon.
Back at the Guinness Open Gate Brewery, the Irish Village featured three consecutive weekends of celebration culminating on St. Patrick’s Day. Attendees of all ages participated, indicative of the family-friendly atmosphere the brewery aims to maintain. Perkins reflected on how everyone bands together to share the significance of their Irish heritage, appreciating the collective enjoyment generated by such events.
Across the nation, celebrations took various forms. From corned beef and cabbage to Irish stouts and ales, restaurants and bars nationwide engaged patrons with menus honoring the Irish legacy. The Old Sacramento Waterfront was among the locales where various coffee shops and eateries embraced the holiday spirit, showcasing themed offerings throughout March.
And it wasn't just the food and drink offerings drawing the crowds—there was palpable energy and joy seen throughout the areas celebrating. With parades, lively music, and the promise of community, it’s clear how St. Patrick's Day has become much more than merely sipping beer. It symbolizes unity and pride among those tracing their roots to Ireland.
Yet, as the holiday saw gatherings and cheer, the juxtaposition of such festivities against difficult realities, like deportation disputes, reminds communities of the challenges faced around immigration. Such concerns may weigh on the hearts of attendees. Each sip of Irish whiskey or warming cup of Irish coffee carries stories of longing, heritage, and often struggles.
The day’s events, with their mix of joy and reflection, encapsulate the multitudes of experiences found within Irish celebrations. While pints are raised boldly, thoughts are likely too on past and present narratives surrounding the Irish diaspora globally, including some present who have returned to embrace their ancestry. The essence of St. Patrick's Day goes beyond mere merrymaking; it weaves stories of resilience and belonging.
Moving forward, as attendees finish their celebrations, many will surely carry the warmth of community with them, inspired by the traditions upheld and shared over Irish-related foods and drinks. After all, significant celebrations—like St. Patrick's Day—encourage reflection on where we've come from as much as where we are going.
The festive gatherings may end, but the bonds formed during these celebrations persist, weaving together the fabric of cultural identity, community, and celebration for everyone involved.
