Celebrating 80 Years Of Freedom Across The Netherlands

Communities unite for a day filled with activities honoring liberation and remembrance.

On May 5, 2025, communities across the Netherlands will come together to celebrate 80 years of freedom, marking a significant milestone in the nation's history. Festivities will take place in various locations, including De Westereen, Cruquius, Amsterdam, Zeewolde, and more, each offering unique activities that honor the spirit of liberation.

In De Westereen, the celebration will kick off at IJsbaan de Wieken, where a vibrant program is planned for all ages. Starting early in the morning, a children’s flea market will run from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, allowing local kids to sell their wares in a festive environment. The highlight of the day will be the arrival of a liberation column featuring vintage military vehicles, expected to roll through the town between 9:45 and 10:30 AM. This event serves as a powerful reminder of the past, symbolizing the freedom that many fought for.

At 11:00 AM, a bird of prey show will showcase various raptors, including an American bald eagle and several owls, further emphasizing the theme of freedom. Throughout the day, attendees can view footage from the liberation of Fryslân in 1945, courtesy of the Fries Film Archief. As the day winds down, a matinee featuring music by local singer Bertus Sipma will commence at 4:00 PM, ensuring a festive atmosphere continues into the evening.

Meanwhile, Cruquius will also host a celebration at the village hall on Oude Spaarneweg, featuring a flea market, live music, and performances by local artists. A significant moment will occur when a tile adorned with a ladybug, symbolizing the fight against senseless violence, is unveiled. On the evening of May 4, residents are invited to gather at the village hall to participate in a solemn march to the freedom tree, where a commemorative speech will be delivered by councilor Jordy Schaap. The following day, festivities will commence at 11:00 AM, with live performances and car rides scheduled throughout the afternoon.

In Amsterdam, the Vrijheidsbal promises an exhilarating night filled with dance and music, aiming to create a bridge between remembrance and celebration. Organizer Freek Wallagh emphasizes the event’s goal of attracting a diverse audience, including those who typically do not engage with nightlife. With performances and light art installations, the event will embody the theme "Light in Remembrance, Freedom in Darkness."

Simultaneously, the Bevrijdingsdans Festival at Museumplein will offer a day of dance workshops ranging from African dance to ballet, catering to all ages and skill levels. Attendees can also enjoy a silent disco and performances from the ÁMÀL Ensemble, which blends various cultural influences into a vibrant musical experience.

For those looking for a more interactive experience, the Workshop We All Want Cake on the Rederij Lampedusa tour boat invites participants to create edible sculptures while discussing complex societal themes. This unique workshop aims to foster dialogue about freedom and community through a creative lens.

The day will also feature a special event at the Homomonument, where the Regenboog Danspaleis will host a celebration for LGBTQ+ seniors. This gathering will include music from classic hits, allowing attendees to dance and reminisce together.

In Zeewolde, the day will begin with the ceremonial handover of the Freedom Fire to the mayor at the Kerkplein, followed by a day filled with music, speeches, and children’s activities. Local performers, including the Zeewolder Symphony Orchestra, will grace the stage with their talents, while freedom soup will be distributed to attendees as a symbol of community and togetherness.

As part of the nationwide celebration, various events will also take place in other parts of the country. In Amsterdam, the Torpedo Theater will host live podcast recordings, allowing locals to share their stories and memories of World War II. The concert on the Amstel, featuring well-known artists like Jeangu Macrooy and Kinderen voor Kinderen, will culminate the day’s festivities, broadcast live for those unable to attend in person.

In the spirit of inclusivity, the Vrij Bevrijdingsfestival at the Anton de Komplein will offer a platform for local artists and community members to celebrate freedom through music and performances, while the Syrische Vrijheidsmaaltijd at Tolhuistuin will provide a communal dining experience, inviting guests to share their personal interpretations of freedom.

As the nation reflects on the significance of liberation, events like the Ode aan Surinaamse verzetsheldin Elisabeth Bergen at Bijlmer parktheater will highlight the stories of lesser-known heroes, ensuring that the contributions of all individuals are recognized and celebrated.

Overall, the 80th anniversary of freedom in the Netherlands serves as a reminder of the struggles faced in the past and the importance of celebrating the liberties enjoyed today. With a plethora of events designed to engage and inspire, communities across the country will come together to honor this pivotal moment in history.
