CDC Reveals 2024 Cruise Ship Hygiene Ratings

Cruise lines face scrutiny as outbreaks raise concerns over sanitation and health standards.

2024 has proven to be another tumultuous year for the cruise industry, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) releasing their much-anticipated Vessel Sanitation Program scores. These results reflect the industry's commitment to public health and hygiene, particularly amid several reported outbreaks of norovirus and other illnesses. According to the CDC, cruise ships scoring below 85 out of 100 are deemed unsatisfactory, and the threshold for concerns is particularly significant for those passengers prioritizing health and safety.

This year, the CDC recorded 13 bacterial and viral outbreaks on cruise ships, most commonly linked to norovirus, often referred to as the 'winter vomiting bug.' This highly contagious virus can spread rapidly among passengers and crew, leading to symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach cramps, effectively ruining vacations. Public health officials strategically conduct surprise inspections on cruise ships, assessing sanitation and safety across common areas like pools, buffets, and children's activity centers.

Throughout 2024, the CDC carried out 151 inspections across various vessels. An impressive average score of 95.9 was recorded, with 27 ships achieving perfect scores of 100. Yet, not all fared well. Nine ships failed to break the 90-point threshold, with notable names included. The Hanseatic Inspiration of Hapag-Lloyd Cruises initially received a dismal score of 62 but was later re-evaluated and bumped to 89 after addressing operational concerns highlighted by the CDC.

The other ships lagging behind are:

  • Carnival Elation: 89

  • Adventure of the Seas: 89

  • National Geographic Sea Bird: 88

  • Carnival Miracle: 88

  • MSC Magnifica: 86

  • Evrima: 86

  • Carnival Breeze: 86

  • Caribbean Princess: 86

Following scrutiny over poor scores, cruise line representatives have expressed their commitment to hygiene standards. A spokesperson for Hapag-Lloyd stated the initial score for Hanseatic Inspiration was deemed “a very unfortunate incident” and emphasized their ships routinely meet stringent hygiene requirements. The company quickly dedicated resources to remediate operational standards to comply with CDC evaluations.

Similarly, MSC Cruises reflected on the score of their ship Magnifica. They reported the implementation of immediate changes based on CDC suggestions to improve hygiene. Their strategy appears to focus on maintaining high standards, citing many of their vessels like the MSC Meraviglia and MSC Seashore, which routinely secure top scores.

From the findings, it is clear how health and sanitation remain priorities within the cruise sector. With 151 inspections, some ships revealed troubling issues such as vermin infestations or failure to maintain necessary handwashing stations. These findings significantly impact hygiene scores, as any indication of pest presence can severely dock points during evaluations.

The CDC evaluates ships based on specific criteria, emphasizing the condition of pools, hot tubs, plats, food storage arrangements, and operational protocols to maintain hygiene. Deliberate measures are taken to conduct inspections and enforce guidelines to safeguard passengers. Ships have to navigate the increasingly challenging waters of public scrutiny, especially after reported illness outbreaks.

Another ship, the Crystal Serenity, exhibited notable improvement when it raised its initial score of 89 to reach passing marks of 90 months later, exemplifying how active management can lead to successful outcomes. The Margaritaville at Sea Paradise initially scored poorly at 83 but later scored 92 after corrective measures.

So, what does this signify for industry reputability? The rapid inspection culture and emphasis on hygiene reflect the cruise industry's adaptation to higher public health expectations. Choosing to report illnesses only when 3 percent or more of passengers or crew show symptoms means the industry is also self-regulating to some degree.

Addressing potential outbreaks remains central to operational practices. Outbreaks reported include cases aboard the Coral Princess during its charter from Singapore to Los Angeles, drawing attention to the virus vulnerabilities of these floating cities. Despite these challenges, cruise lines continue to present their commitment to health protocols.

While nine ships stood out due to lower sanitation scores, the average and consistent performance by many ships indicates there remains hope. It’s evident this year will push cruise companies to strengthen their systems to contend with outbreaks and sanitation practices. The continuous reevaluations highlight an industry striving for excellence and safety.

For cruise enthusiasts and traveling families, the CDC’s scores are more than numerical evaluations—they are reflections of the health milieu of the cruise experience. Passengers expect their ships to not only be luxurious but also safe, propelling cruise lines toward heightened vigilance as the industry navigates these sanitation standards.
