Cardiff City Stuns Sheffield United With FA Cup Win

Cian Ashford's first-half goal secures Bluebirds' advancement to the fourth round.

Cardiff City pulled off a remarkable upset, defeating Sheffield United 1-0 during the FA Cup third round tie at Bramall Lane on January 8, 2024. The match, witnessed by just 6,126 fans, showcased Cardiff's impressive performance against their Championship rivals, who sit 20 places above them on the league ladder.

The decisive moment came from Cardiff's very own Cian Ashford, who scored the only goal of the match at the 19-minute mark. After dispossessing Sheffield's Rhys Norrington-Davies, the 20-year-old academy product darted clear of defenders and produced a composed finish past the Blades' goalkeeper Adam Davies. This goal not only underscored Ashford's talent but also demonstrated the Bluebirds' resilience amid their struggles this season, where they are battling to avoid relegation.

Cardiff's manager, Omer Riza, made seven changes to the starting XI from their previous draw with Middlesbrough, which included young talents like Ashford and U21 right-back Ronan Kpakio. Riza's decision paid off, as his team maintained discipline and structure throughout the match, effectively countering Sheffield's possession-oriented style.

Following the match, Ashford expressed the delight felt within the team: "We're all buzzing in the changing room. That is what we came here to do. We came here to perform and get our name in the hat for the next round." He also reflected on his personal goal achievement, saying, "I missed a chance last year in the FA Cup, so I'm really glad to get my first goal in this competition. The last few games, it feels like we're building momentum as a team."

On the other hand, Sheffield United, who are aiming for immediate promotion to the Premier League, started the match without key players due to injuries. Their manager, Chris Wilder, made similar squad adjustments owing to the busy Christmas schedule, resulting in seven changes to their lineup as well. Despite having ample possession, Sheffield was restricted to few clear chances and struggled to break down Cardiff's organized defense.

The Blades had several opportunities to level the score, particularly through their substitutes Harrison Burrows and Rhian Brewster, but neither found the back of the net. Notably, Burrows struck the post late on, serving as the only tip of luck for Sheffield, but it proved insufficient for salvaging the game.

Riza praised his players’ performance afterward, saying: "Cian is excellent. He listens, he learns and he wants to do well. I’m delighted for him. I think it was a resilient performance. To come here and get a clean sheet, they put us under pressure, but we dealt with it well." This victory marks only Cardiff's second win over Sheffield United at Bramall Lane since 2005, emphasizing the significance of the win for the struggling Bluebirds.

The match also marked Joe Ralls' 400th appearance for Cardiff City, adding another layer of achievement to the victory. With their FA Cup advancement, Cardiff City is now focused on their next cup and league challenges, aiming to ride this wave of newfound confidence.

Looking forward, Cardiff City will host Watford next, and Riza’s side appears ready to take on the challenges awaiting them. "We’re unbeaten in four now, and we’ll keep working hard," Riza noted, indicating the team's determination to push forward as they continue their season.

Cardiff City now advances to the FA Cup fourth round, ready to seize the moment and build on their momentum, hoping for more upsets as they seek to recover from the difficulties faced this season.
