Thailand Explores New Gaming Industry Act

Public consultations aim to shape regulation for sustainable growth and social protection.

Thailand is gearing up to mark significant developments within its gaming industry by exploring the 'Draft Gaming Industry Promotion Act'. This consultation was led by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Economy and Society, Phaisit Chantharathong, during a recent meeting on January 10, 2023, held at the National Telecommunications Company's conference room.

The drafted law aims to solidify and promote the gaming industry as it has been recognized for its potentials to contribute to Thailand's economy. The Ministry of Digital Economy held this public consultation to gather insights from various stakeholders, including governmental bodies, private sector representatives, and academic institutions, thereby ensuring comprehensive community engagement.

During the meeting, Phaisit Chantharathong stated, "This Gaming Industry Promotion Act will serve as a significant step toward developing our nation's game industry." His view reflects the commitment to not only expand this sector but also the intent behind crafting regulations to secure balanced industry growth and social welfare.

Expanding on the aim of the drafted law, Dr. Natthaphon Nimmanparachin, Director-General of the Digital Economy Promotion Agency (DEPA), said, "We aim for the law to balance industry promotion and social protection, especially for youth." This highlights the dual focus of the legislation to encourage economic benefits through entertainment and safeguard against potential negative societal impacts.

Participatory discussions included contributions from the Thai Game Software Industry Association and various local game developers who expressed insights about global trends and competitive challenges faced by the sector.

The gaming industry is rapidly growing and gaining recognition as one of the creative industries with significant economic importance. With the increasing penetration of digital technology and the consumption of entertainment content, strategic measures must be placed so the country can maximize this potential.

Should the Gaming Industry Promotion Act be enacted, it is expected to introduce regulations for licensing, certification, and support for developers. This legal framework would not only establish standards but would also facilitate the global competitiveness of Thai gaming firms.

Both government representatives and stakeholders view the new legislation as pivotal for creating channels for sustainable job growth within the digital economy by opening doors for new career paths associated with the gaming and interactive entertainment sectors.

Stakeholders also underscored the importance of addressing societal concerns related to gaming, particularly among younger populations. The act aims to include provisions on responsible gaming and awareness campaigns to prevent possible negative outcomes associated with excessive gaming habits.

Moving forward, the Digital Economy Ministry plans to consolidate all feedback gathered from this public consultation to refine the draft prior to its importance assessment by the Cabinet, expected within the upcoming months.

Conclusively, the anticipated Gaming Industry Promotion Act symbolizes Thailand's progressive stance toward recognizing and nurturing the burgeoning gaming industry, with comprehensive legislative support strengthening the foundation to both stimulate economic growth and address the challenges posed by this dynamic field.
