Cameron Diaz Open To Reprising Role For The Mask Sequel

Diaz expresses interest, contingent on Jim Carrey's involvement, creating buzz for potential follow-up.

Cameron Diaz is ready to go green (again). Diaz, who just came out of a 10-year retirement from acting in Netflix’s “Back in Action,” recently revealed to Access Hollywood her willingness to return for a sequel to the 1994 comedy “The Mask” as long as Jim Carrey is involved.

If the iconic actor reconnects with her as nightclub singer Tina Carlyle, Diaz would be thrilled. "If Jim’s on board, I mean, I’ve been riding those coattails from day one," she shared during the interview.

The original "The Mask" starred Carrey as the mild-mannered bank teller Stanley Ipkis, whose life transforms drastically when he discovers a magical mask granting him extraordinary, mischievous powers. Carrey is also open to the idea of reprising his role for another installment, but under specific circumstances.

According to Comicbook.com, Carrey noted, "Oh gosh, you know, it has to be the right idea." The actor emphasized the importance of having a solid script for any potential sequel, portraying his cautious approach. "It’s not really about the money," he added with jest, highlighting the need for creativity over capitalize success.

Following her return to the screen, Diaz seems to be relishing the opportunity to expand her portfolio. During her interview with Access Hollywood, she also mentioned her interest in reuniting with her "Charlie's Angels" co-stars Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu for another sequel. "I’m gonna text [Liu] right now and pitch her Jamie as Bosley,” she playfully quipped about their recent co-star Jamie Foxx.

The conversation surrounding a sequel to "The Mask" has been lively over the years, with fans often expressing excitement at the prospect of seeing Carrey back on screen donning the green mask. This speculation has only intensified with Diaz apparently ready to join him once again.

While both actors have their respective projects underway, the nostalgia tied to the original film continues to make waves on social media and entertainment discussions, sparking hopes among fans. With Diaz’s enthusiasm aligning with Carrey’s careful consideration of the project, the potential for another comedic classic remains intriguing.

Last seen reprising his role as Doctor Robotnik in “Sonic the Hedgehog 3,” Carrey continues to navigate his career with thoughtful selections, hinting at his enduring attachment to significant past roles. His reflections on retirement suggest he might just be waiting for the right creative opportunity to emerge before choosing his next move.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the film’s production schedule and what direction it might take, both Diaz and Carrey's comments shed light on their existing camaraderie and the persistent longing for projects they resonate with. The excitement around the possibility of them joining forces again might just keep the hopes alive among fans of the original.

Will we see the zany duo back on-screen together? Only time will tell, but Diaz's recent assertions certainly keep the flame of anticipation burning bright. With the magical lore of “The Mask” and the undeniable chemistry of its leading actors, the notion of a sequel certainly teems with potential.
