California Implements REAL ID Requirements For Travel

Starting today, a REAL ID is needed for domestic flights and federal access.

On May 7, 2025, the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) implemented a significant change affecting air travel and access to federal facilities. Starting today, a REAL ID or another federally accepted form of identification is now required to board domestic flights and enter secure federal facilities. This law, which Congress passed in 2005 in response to the 9/11 attacks, establishes minimum security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards.

DMV Director Steve Gordon emphasized the importance of the REAL ID, stating, "The DMV is continuing to issue REAL IDs, just as we have for the last seven years." He added that if individuals already possess a federally approved document, such as a valid U.S. passport, they can choose to wait until their ID or driver’s license is due for renewal before upgrading to a REAL ID.

As of May 1, 2025, California boasts 19,485,231 REAL ID cardholders, which represents about 58% of all driver’s license and ID cardholders in the state. This statistic highlights the widespread adoption of the REAL ID among Californians, reflecting a growing awareness of the new identification requirements.

For those looking to obtain a REAL ID, the DMV has streamlined the application process. Interested individuals can visit REALID.dmv.ca.gov to begin their online application, where they can also upload necessary documents. However, applicants must still visit a DMV office to present physical copies of their uploaded documents to complete the application.

To expedite the process and reduce wait times, the DMV strongly encourages customers to make an appointment and complete the online application beforehand. By starting the process online, it is estimated that applicants will spend only about 20 to 30 minutes in the office.

To further assist customers, the DMV is extending hours at 18 offices across the state. From now until June 27, 2025, select DMV locations will open one hour early—7 a.m. to 8 a.m.—by appointment only on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Additionally, some offices will also be open on Saturdays in May from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. for REAL ID appointments.

Regular office hours remain 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesdays. The DMV encourages customers to utilize its online services for various tasks, as many DMV transactions no longer require an office visit. This approach aims to streamline the process and enhance customer convenience.

As the deadline for compliance with the REAL ID Act approaches, Californians are urged to ensure they have the necessary identification to avoid complications when traveling or accessing federal facilities. The DMV remains committed to providing the resources and support needed to help residents navigate these changes effectively.
