California Braces For Severe Winter Storm Watch

Areas across the state expect significant snowfall and hazardous travel conditions this week

California is bracing for severe winter weather as the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a winter storm watch for numerous areas, including the 5 Freeway corridor through Grapevine and the Frazier Mountain Communities. The winter storm watch was announced on Monday, March 10, 2025, at 4:31 a.m. and is set to remain in effect from Wednesday, March 12, at 5 p.m. until Friday, March 14, at 5 a.m.

The NWS has warned of potential heavy snow, particularly at higher elevations, with total accumulations expected to range from 2 to 6 inches above 4,000 feet, and up to 15 inches at the highest elevations. Winds are predicted to gust as high as 45 mph, creating hazardous travel conditions. The NWS cautioned, "Travel could be very difficult to impossible. The hazardous conditions could impact the Wednesday evening and Thursday morning commutes. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches and cause power outages." This notice serves as both a warning and guidance for all motorists.

Los Angeles County, which is also included in the winter storm watch, is facing similar forecasts, with snow accumulations of approximately 12 to 24 inches above 6,500 to 7,000 feet. The NWS indicated lower mountain areas could see anywhere from 1 to 5 inches, and up to 1 inch as low as 3,000 feet, with winds potentially gusting up to 50 mph.

Travelers are being advised to monitor the latest forecasts closely as conditions evolve. The areas most likely to be affected include the Western San Gabriel Mountains and the Highway 14 Corridor, which are expected to bear the brunt of the snowstorm.

Winter weather can be treacherous, contributing to over 6,000 weather-related vehicle fatalities and more than 480,000 injuries each year due to road conditions exacerbated by ice and snow. For drivers, it is imperative to prioritize safety by slowing down during inclement weather and to always assume icy conditions might be present when temperatures are near freezing. Icy patches can often be hidden, and being cautious can prevent accidents.

The NWS has provided several winter driving tips to help keep individuals safe on the road during these hazardous conditions. First and foremost, travelers should share their plans with friends or family if venturing out during dangerous weather. Letting someone know your route and estimated time of arrival can aid emergency responders if needed.

It's also tempting to hit the road with less on the mind, so it’s important to prepare your vehicle. This includes ensuring the fuel tank is full and equipping the car with winter essentials: windshield scrapers, jumper cables, and non-perishable food items are just the beginning, along with warm clothing and drinking water. With these items, people are much more equipped for any emergencies.

If you get stranded during the storm, it’s suggested to remain calm and stay within your vehicle. Not only is this safer, but it increases your chances of being found. A helpful measure is to signal for help by attaching cloth to the antenna or mirror of your car, which will make your vehicle more visible to searchers. Utilizing your dome light and hazard lights can also draw attention, as staying patient is key during these unforeseen situations.

Drivers are advised to be mindful of snow plows on the road. When encountering these vehicles, they should provide ample space and wait for safe opportunities to pass.

Those planning to travel should check road conditions before hitting the road and adjust plans accordingly. Weather can change rapidly, and having the latest information enables safer decisions.

Overall, the upcoming winter storm poses significant risks for residents and travelers alike. The National Weather Service emphasizes the importance of remaining alert and prepared as the storm approaches. Monitoring real-time weather updates could be the difference between danger and safety.

Winter's grip can often bring hardship, but with preparation and cautious driving, everyone can improve their chances of safely weathering the storm. Stay tuned for updates from the NWS as conditions evolve throughout the week.
