BYD Launches Game-Changing 1000 KW Charging Stations

The company prepares to roll out 500 ultrafast chargers in April to support new electric vehicle models.

In a significant leap for electric vehicle (EV) technology, BYD, the Chinese automotive giant, is set to deploy its groundbreaking 1,000 kW ultrafast charging stations across China. The first batch of 500 of these innovative chargers will become operational in early April 2025, coinciding with the launch of BYD’s new Han L sedan and Tang L SUV.

Unveiled on March 17, 2025, the 1 MW charging stations, aptly named the "Megawatt Flash Charger," are designed to charge vehicles at an astonishing rate, adding 400 kilometers of range in just five minutes. This technology not only exceeds the capabilities of Tesla's latest V4 Supercharger, which offers a maximum output of 500 kW, but also positions BYD at the forefront of the EV charging revolution.

Li Yunfei, BYD’s Brand General Manager, expressed confidence in the company’s technology, stating, "Some people still don’t believe it or have doubts. But BYD’s style has always been – mass production as soon as it is released. 500 units of 1000 kW charging stations will be available in April." This bold statement underscores BYD's commitment to rapid technological advancement and mass production.

The ambitious plan includes the construction of 4,000 1 MW charging stations, which will be equipped with energy storage systems. This feature ensures that the chargers can deliver the required power even in regions where the local grid may struggle to supply sufficient electricity. The 1 MW charger is part of BYD’s Super e-Platform, a comprehensive system that also includes a 30,000 rpm motor, a dual charging system, and a battery capable of a remarkable 10C charging rate. This means that the battery can theoretically be fully charged in just six minutes, a feat that no other mass-produced battery has achieved to date. Li noted, "In some technologies, BYD is currently leading, but it is possible that in time, it will be surpassed by other companies with even better technologies, which is a good thing!"

Both the Han L and Tang L models, which are set to be officially launched in April, have already begun presales starting at 270,000 yuan (approximately $37,300). These vehicles boast impressive specifications, including a zero-to-hundred acceleration time in the two-second range and a powertrain that delivers over 1,000 horsepower. The high-voltage system operates at 1,000 volts, enabling the rapid charging capabilities that BYD is promoting.

Interestingly, the Han L and Tang L can utilize two charging plugs simultaneously, a technology that has been previously tested on BYD's Denza D9 model. This feature allows for even faster charging times, further enhancing the user experience. In practice, BYD has demonstrated that the Han L can gain 2 kilometers of range per second when connected to a 1,000 kW charger, showcasing the efficiency of their new technology.
