Authorities have arrested two brothers charged with the murder of 23-year-old Chloe Jade Mason, who was shot dead on December 22, 2022, on Railway Parade, Caboolture. The horrors of her death have sent shockwaves through the local community, as the heartbreaking loss just days before Christmas continues to resonate with family and friends.
Brothers Codye Thomson, 29, and Kaine Thomson-Gleeson, 32, were apprehended without incident at parkland off Civic Parade, Logan, about 2pm on January 2, 2023. The pair is accused of being involved in Mason’s fatal shooting, which occurred early on the morning of December 22. According to police, she was allegedly chased down before being shot, resulting in her dying from her injuries at the scene.
Dani Mason, Chloe’s sister, expressed mixed emotions following the arrests, saying, “I’m not upset today, I’m happy. Someone needs to be held accountable. It’s been too many weeks of pain and suffering for my family.” Her sentiment captures the urgency and desire for justice felt by the family and the community.
After the tragic event, authorities initiated an extensive manhunt for the suspects. Police had initially interviewed the brothers as witnesses the day Mason was murdered but released them due to insufficient evidence. Following their release, it is believed they fled to northern New South Wales, where they were camping or sleeping rough.
Detective Inspector David Harbison stated at the time, “Investigators have worked tirelessly to locate the accused and police appreciate the assistance we have received from the community.” Their efforts culminated satisfactorily on Monday with the brothers' arrests.
Mason was found unconscious outside of the residence at Railway Parade, where the alleged shooting occurred. Emergency services were unable to revive her, and she died at the scene from her injuries. Authorities allege the brothers and Mason were known to each other, and there was potential for personal motives behind the violent encounter.
More troubling revelations surfaced as investigations progressed. Police discovered evidence, including a rifle, which underwent forensic testing. It was reported by the police, led by Detective Inspector Harbison, “It is alleged the deceased received a gunshot wound during the altercation and died.” This has prompted the community to demand accountability from those involved.
Aerial footage and police bodycam video capture moments leading up to the arrests, showing Thomson and Thomson-Gleeson surrendering peacefully to officers near the playground at Logan Central. This footage came as part of the efforts to capture valuable evidence following the tragedy.
The brothers now face serious charges of murder and will appear before the Brisbane Magistrates Court. With community trust hanging by a thread, many individuals continue to share stories of Mason, highlighting her kind-hearted nature and jovial spirit.
“Chloe was loved by many. She was a daughter, a sister, and she was going to be missed dearly by a lot of people,” said Dani Mason. Her remarks reflect the communal grief experienced by those who knew Chloe, emphasizing the loss transcended beyond family and reached community bounds.
Authorities remain hopeful as investigations continue to gather evidence to build their case. Many local residents have come together, sharing their memories of Mason, rallying for justice not only for her but also ensuring such violence does not happen again.
Moreton District Detective Inspector Harbison noted the importance of public assistance, saying, “We’d like to thank the public for their help to find the two men.” This statement is indicative of the role community involvement plays during such trying times, bridging gaps left by tragedy.
Chloe’s family, still grappling with the heart-wrenching reality of her absence, has begun the lengthy process of healing. Dani Mason seems to share this sentiment, stating, “This loss has devastated our family... we struggle to come to terms with this so close to the holidays.”
While the pain of losing someone so vibrant cannot be understated, the family is resolute, wanting answers and accountability for their beloved Chloe. The road to justice will begin with the upcoming court proceedings, where the community will be watching closely.
