Broadway Lights Dimming For Gavin Creel Amid Outrage

Theaters will honor Gavin Creel and others after backlash over partial tribute plans

New York's Broadway theaters are gearing up for a poignant tribute worthy of the industry’s legendary stature. Following widespread outcry from fans and industry professionals alike, the lights of all 41 theaters will dim on separate nights to honor late theater greats Gavin Creel, Maggie Smith, and Adrian Bailey. This decision, announced by the Committee of Theatre Owners, follows the unexpected death of Creel, who passed away on September 30, 2024, from a rare form of cancer called metastatic melanotic peripheral nerve sheath sarcoma.

The tributes for Creel and Smith are currently pending dates, but the lights will dim for Bailey, who appeared in over 15 Broadway productions, on October 17. Creel, known for his dazzling performances and significant contributions to the Broadway scene, had won the prestigious Tony Award for his role as Cornelius Hackl in Hello, Dolly! alongside Bette Midler.

Initially, the Broadway League sparked controversy when they proposed only partial dimming of the lights for Creel—meaning only one theater from each owner would participate. This limited tribute prompted theater-goers and colleagues to voice their discontent over social media, leading to the creation of online petitions demanding full participation from all theaters. Adam Feldman, a theater critic, initiated one such petition which amassed over 22,000 signatures, arguing for equal respect for all figures who contributed to Broadway.

"Everyone who receives the tribute deserves the full tribute," said Actors' Equity, the union representing thousands of stage professionals. This sentiment echoed among many within the community who felt strongly about honoring Creel’s legacy. Renowned playwright Paula Vogel added her voice, stating, “Not dimming all the lights was a travesty to this brilliant actor who put money in pockets and joy in audiences.”

The criticism harkens back to earlier instances where dimming practices raised eyebrows, such as for Elizabeth Ireland McCann and Marin Mazzie, where public pressure led to full ceremonies after initial decisions for partial recognitions. Creel’s tragic passing and the subsequent reactions have now placed this tradition under the spotlight once again, prompting discussions about who and how Broadway pays tribute.

Creel, who made his Broadway debut with Thoroughly Modern Millie and was equally celebrated for his roles in Hair and The Book of Mormon, had captivated audiences and peers alike. His death came unexpectedly at just 48 years old, igniting discussions not only about his contributions but about the broader significance of how distinguished talents are honored posthumously.

Further complicity arose from the format of these tributes, historically granting full dimming to icons of Broadway, whereas lesser-known figures often received minor acknowledgments. The dimming of marquee lights has been tradition for over seventy years, marking the collective mourning of the Broadway community, and has now come under scrutiny during this recent wave of grief.

Despite the initial backlash against the Broadway League's proposal, the organization's swift reassessment showcased the power of community voices. On October 9, the League announced they would honor Creel and Bailey with full dimming ceremonies, recognizing the widespread calls for equality and respect within the theater community.

Smith, the esteemed veteran of stage and screen, will also be receiving the same honor. Over the years, she has accrued numerous accolades, including three Tony nominations and recognition for her roles across various platforms, carving out her legacy as one of the most respected figures on and off the stage.

While many have expressed gratefulness at the League's final decision, it also emphasizes the importance of continuing discussions about the policies governing tributes on Broadway. Questions linger on who qualifies for the full honors and the criteria set by the League, as they prepare to review their dimming policy and procedures—especially after this emotional uproar.

This collective moment not only honors those who have passed but also serves as a clarion call for the industry, reminding everyone of the artistic contributions made by these figures. Maintaining the pulse of Broadway means ensuring every member’s legacy is treated with the utmost respect, fostering inclusivity even at times of mourning.

Gavin Creel's memorable performances brought joy, laughter, and even tears to countless audiences across his two-decade career. His camaraderie with peers, the special filigree of friendship, and the unyielding passion for theater were etched deep within the hearts of those who witnessed his magical artistry.

With November fast approaching, Broadway’s dimming lights will serve as both a tribute and reminder of the richness the theater community possesses, and the worthiness of remembering every luminary who contributed sparkling moments to this revered stage. Just as stars linger in the night, so too will the legacy of Gavin Creel, Adrian Bailey, and Maggie Smith—celebrated long after the lights dim.
