Brighton Music Store GAK Closes Amid Speculation

The sudden closure raises concerns about the future of the iconic music retailer in Brighton.

Speculation is swirling around the future of GAK, a long-standing music store in Brighton, following its sudden closure for what the company describes as maintenance. The flagship store, known for its distinctive yellow facade, has been closed since March 25, 2025, with a sign stating it would be shut for seven days. However, the abrupt closure has raised eyebrows and prompted discussions about the store's viability.

Located in North Laine, GAK has been a staple in the community since it opened its doors in 1992. The store is well-known for selling a wide range of musical instruments and equipment, including popular brands like Fender, Gibson, Roland, and Yamaha. Despite the physical store's closure, customers can still shop online, although many items are currently discounted.

According to local newspaper The Argus, confusion surrounding the closure has left customers and neighboring businesses in the dark. One customer who had ordered a guitar received an email from a GAK staff member stating, "Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances the shop is closed and we’re unable to do any trading for the time being." This message has only fueled speculation about the store's future.

In addition to the closure, GAK's Reverb store has pulled all listings, leading to further questions about its operational status. Meanwhile, a listing on Business Sale Report describes a "Musical instrument Retailer & Supplier" seeking a "Fast Sale," although the listing does not explicitly mention GAK. This listing has emerged at a time when the store's future seems uncertain.

Online forums have been buzzing with discussions about GAK's situation. A post on the r/brighton subreddit titled "R.I.P. GAK" garnered over 150 comments before it was deleted. One user lamented, "If it’s permanently closed it’s another loss to our city," reflecting the sentiments of many who view the store as a key part of Brighton's cultural landscape.

Adding to the speculation, the Brighton-based band Space Angel commented on a private Facebook group for local musicians, stating that GAK has until Monday, March 31, 2025, to find a buyer. They claimed that staff had been sent home and that the store is essentially bankrupt.

GAK was acquired in 2021 by co-managing directors Max McKellar and Ian Stephens, who had plans to enhance the store's online presence and adapt to the changing landscape of retail. At the time of the acquisition, they expressed optimism about the future, stating, "While GAK and the music industry have encountered and overcome challenges in recent years, we are now perfectly placed to take advantage of both short and long-term opportunities." However, the current circumstances suggest that those opportunities may be dwindling.

Neighboring shops have expressed sadness and confusion regarding GAK's closure. One staff member described their feelings, saying they were "sad" about what was happening to the iconic store. The abrupt nature of the closure has left many in the community worried about the potential loss of a beloved local business.

As of now, GAK has not responded to repeated requests for comment from The Argus or other media outlets. The lack of communication from the store has only added to the uncertainty surrounding its future. With the music industry facing numerous challenges, the fate of GAK remains precarious.

As the situation develops, many in Brighton will be watching closely to see if GAK can navigate this difficult period. Whether the store can find a buyer or resolve its financial troubles will determine its future in the vibrant music community it has served for over three decades.
