Brescia is embracing the spirit of Christmas this year with numerous events and activities aimed at spreading joy and community engagement. The city welcomed the Luce di Betlemme, or the Light of Bethlehem, signaling hope and peace.
On December 20, the light arrived by train at 1:26 PM, making stops at various localities including Rovato and Chiari. It was also carried by hand by individuals who collected it at the stations. For example, Gussago's mayor, Giovanni Coccoli, brought the light to his town square, where the community gathered to partake in the illumination ceremony. The city council's president, Roberto Rossini, expressed solidarity with those affected by war around the world, reflecting on the significance of the light as it connects communities. "We welcome this opportunity for peace from a tormented land – we are close to those who are currently suffering from war," Rossini stated.
The light was brought to the Church of San Francesco after the ceremony at the station, where individuals could take home their candles. The light will be available to the public on December 23 and 24, and after January 2, at the Acli provincial headquarters on Via Corsica, thanks to the collaboration of local women and secretaries, who helped collect the flame at the station. This annual tradition, originating from the Tyrolean Scouts back in 1986, aims to launch small flames of peace throughout the world each December.
Also occurring during this festive period is the “Che Coperta” crochet workshop on December 20 at 5 PM at the UAU Library on Via Milano 105/P. This workshop is focused on teaching basic crochet techniques and collaborating on creating a blanket made of colorful squares reminiscent of the traditional granny square. This series, which is the fifth of its kind, encourages community crafting and is free of charge.
Further enriching the holiday experience, Brescia is hosting guided tours as part of the “Buon Natale Brescia 2024” festivities organized by the municipality. On December 21, two special sessions will take place. At 10:30 AM, children aged 6 to 12 can enjoy “The Magic of Christmas” tour, which will explore significant Christmas symbols and their historical meanings. Later, at 3:30 PM, another tour titled “Nativity, Santa Lucia, Santa Claus” will focus on sacred images associated with Christmas prominently displayed within the city's churches.
Those wanting to participate must reserve their spots by contacting Brescia Mobility via email or WhatsApp. The following day, December 22, offers even more opportunities for families to rediscover the charming corners of the city. At 10 AM, there will be a historical city center tour led by professional guides along with artists from the Lelastiko association.
For teenagers aged 10 to 17, there's the “Guess... I Love Brescia Teens” tour scheduled at 10:30 AM, where young explorers will unravel clues and riddles about the city, blending fun with education. Subsequently, at 2:30 PM, 3:30 PM, and 4:30 PM, “The Feathers of the Pachyderm” activity will allow small groups of children to explore Brescia through the streets and learn about the local artist Moretto and his unique works.
All activities are free, but pre-registration is required to facilitate participation, ensuring everyone can seamlessly join the festive exercises organized by the city. This blend of cultural, artistic, and community-oriented activities epitomizes Brescia's dedication to celebrating Christmas with unity and joy.
