Brazilian Tennis Stars Compete At Miami Masters 1000 Tournament

Six players aim for success at this prestigious event in Florida, beginning March 19.

Six Brazilian tennis players are set to compete at the prestigious Miami Masters 1000 tournament in Florida, with matches beginning on March 19, 2025. The lineup includes both male and female athletes aiming to make their mark on the international stage.

First up is Thiago Wild, currently ranked 96th in the world. He will take to the hard court on March 19, facing off against the French player Quentin Halys, who holds the 57th position in the ATP rankings. This match is scheduled to start at 21h30 (Brasilia time) and will be broadcast live on Disney+. Wild recently faced disappointment after being eliminated in the first round of the Challenger de Cap Cana just a week before. He lost that match to Colombian Nicolas Mejia by a score of 2 sets to 1, which has fueled his determination in the Miami Masters.

On March 20, the spotlight will shift to João Fonseca, a rising star in Brazilian tennis. The 18-year-old player, currently ranked 60th in the world, will play against American Learner Tien at around 20h. Fonseca has been in excellent form, clinching three titles this season, including his latest victory at the Challenger of Phoenix, where he triumphed on March 16. Additionally, these two players have previously clashed in two final matchups, with Fonseca winning both—the Next Gen ATP Finals in 2024 and the US Open Juvenil in 2023.

Beatriz Haddad Maia, Brazil's top female player ranked 18th globally, also enters the fray on March 20, as she goes up against the Czech qualifier Linda Fruhvirtova, ranked 215th. This match will kick off at 20h and is anticipated to be particularly significant, as it serves as a rematch of their encounter in last year's Australian Open, where Haddad emerged victorious. However, the Brazilian star has faced early exits in previous tournaments this year, including Indian Wells, Mérida, Dubai, and Doha, and is eager to turn her fortune around in Miami.

The doubles competition will see Luisa Stefani teaming up with Hungarian player Timea Babos on March 20 at 19h, competing against the duo of Norway's Ulrike Eikeri and Mexico's Giulia Olmos. On March 21, Haddad Maia will join forces with German Laura Siegemund to take on the American pair Caroline Dolehide and Storm Hunter at noon, while Marcelo Melo and Rafael Matos will go head-to-head with the Salvadoran Marcelo Arévalo and Croatian Mate Pavic in the men’s doubles draw.

The Miami Masters 1000 tournament offers substantial rewards as well, with singles champions set to receive a staggering prize of $1.12 million (approximately R$ 6.45 million). Runners-up will earn $597,800 (R$ 3.43 million), and each competitive stage has well-defined financial awards that make participating in this event enticing for the athletes.

As the tournament progresses, the Brazilian contingent hopes to leave a significant mark on the Miami Masters, showcasing their talent and determination on one of the sport's biggest stages. With many compelling matchups ahead, tennis fans can expect thrilling performances from these skilled athletes as they compete for victory and valuable points in the ATP rankings.
