Huawei Launches Pura X, Industry's First Wide Foldable Smartphone

The innovative foldable phone combines functionality with a striking design and is set to redefine user experiences.

On March 20, 2025, at the Huawei Pura Pioneer Ceremony and Hongmeng Smart New Product Launch Conference, Huawei unveiled its latest innovation, the Pura X. This smartphone marks a significant leap in design and technology, being the industry’s first wide foldable phone.

The Pura X boasts an impressive design featuring a unique 16:10 internal screen complemented by a compact 3.5-inch external screen. This innovative approach to phone design allows for a larger display area compared to traditional candy bar phones, enhancing user experience for viewing, creating, and browsing.

Yu Chengdong, Huawei's Executive Director and CEO of the Consumer Business Group, showcased the Pura X by folding the smartphone to demonstrate its versatility. "This is a phone that is indeed a phone, but more than a phone," he said. A comment that surely resonates with the brand's commitment to pushing the boundaries of smartphone technology. He highlighted that, unlike traditional smartphones, the Pura X can also operate like a tablet when unfolded, providing users with both compact portability and a broad screen experience.

The device is designed not only for better aesthetics but also emphasizes functionality. It's engineered with an aspect ratio that significantly enhances the display area, making it more user-friendly for tasks that require more screen real estate.

In addition to its innovative screen design, the Pura X is the first mobile device to feature the latest version of Huawei’s operating system, Hongmeng OS 5. This upgrade provides smarter functionalities with a 1:1 smart outer screen, enabling high-frequency operations without needing to unfold the phone. This upgrade aims to improve the overall efficiency of everyday tasks, making the Pura X a compelling choice for tech-savvy consumers.

Interest in the Pura X has been heightened by Huawei's legacy of technological advancements. Yu emphasized the significance of the Pura X launch, comparing it to previous innovations: “Last year, we released a three-fold phone, which is a phone that others can imagine but cannot create. Now, this is the product that people couldn't have imagined.” It’s clear Huawei is keen on setting itself apart in a competitive market filled with constant innovation.

The launch of the Pura X isn’t just about unveiling a new gadget; it demonstrates Huawei’s commitment to futuristic technology. Priced starting at 7499 yuan, the Pura X is set to appeal to consumers searching for a smartphone that offers versatility and modern design.

Looking ahead, Yu Chengdong foreshadowed even more advancements on the horizon. He announced that Huawei's new generation of Hongmeng computers is expected to be revealed in May 2025. This strategy follows the company’s goal to establish an integrated ecosystem that combines smartphones with other smart devices, potentially reshaping how consumers interact with technology.

The Pura X’s launch has significant implications for the mobile technology sector, especially with an eye on shifting consumer preferences toward multifunctional devices that cater to diverse lifestyle needs. Huawei’s blend of cutting-edge design and innovative tech suggests that it’s not only looking to keep pace with the competition but also intends to lead.

As the industry watches closely, updates from Huawei in the coming months will likely generate further excitement. With the introduction of the Pura X and the anticipated release of Hongmeng computers, Huawei is positioning itself well for the future. The reception of this new smartphone will serve as a barometer for consumer trends and expectations in an ever-evolving tech landscape.
