Brandon Graham Retires After 15 Seasons With Eagles

Graham leaves a lasting legacy as Philadelphia transitions to new team leaders

PHILADELPHIA - The Philadelphia Eagles are experiencing a generational shift in leadership as iconic player Brandon Graham announced his retirement on March 18, 2025, after a stellar 15-season career with the team. Known for his resilience, Graham retires ranking third on the Eagles' all-time sack list with 76½. His departure marks the end of an era, following the retirements of fellow icons Jason Kelce and Fletcher Cox, who have filled their roles with the Eagles' leadership.

In an emotional press conference attended by teammates, coaches, and family, Graham reminisced about his storied career. His retirement offered a moment not just to reflect on his achievements, but also on the promising future of the Eagles. The new generation of leadership is exemplified by quarterback Jalen Hurts, right tackle Lane Johnson, and left tackle Jordan Mailata, leading the charge into this new chapter. With Johnson being the only remaining member from their first Super Bowl championship team alongside kicker Jake Elliott, fans are excited to see how this new core will develop.

Despite the looming questions about leadership after Graham's departure, the Eagles have proven their capability to adapt. Graham himself noted, “As hard as that was, I wanted to run, I wanted to go straight to that locker room. But I went out there and I faced it. I think that’s what we all did; we all faced it.” His words underline the ethos he has imparted to younger players like Nolan Smith, who emerged during the past season with a notable playoff performance that included a team-high four sacks. Graham spent considerable time mentoring Smith, helping him navigate pressure situations—a testament to Graham's positive attitude.

Graham's journey to success was not without its challenges. After being drafted in the first round in 2010, he faced injuries early in his career. Such trials fueled his determination and shaped his outlook, as he emphasized in his farewell statement. The former defensive end stated, “If I can tell any kid, it’s that any adversity you go through, don’t run. Just face it, and just know it’s going to be better.” This approach was a guiding principle throughout his time with the Eagles, helping combine a legacy of perseverance and mentorship.

On the football field, Graham made unforgettable contributions including his key strip-sack against Tom Brady in the Eagles' historic Super Bowl victory over the New England Patriots, a play that has been etched in Eagles’ lore. He reflected on that moment, saying, “Somebody made that key play, and that’s all it takes. One big play in the game can cost you.” While Graham may step down as a player, his impact on the team and the community remains indelible.

The Eagles are not resting on their laurels. They recently made a significant move to bolster their defense by signing linebacker Zack Baun, whose standout season in 2024 almost earned him Defensive Player of the Year honors. The three-year, $51 million contract, including $34 million guaranteed, reflects Philadelphia’s commitment to strengthening their roster. In his previous season with the New Orleans Saints, Baun showcased extraordinary prowess, allowing minus-26 Expected Points Added (EPA) as the nearest defender, plus three interceptions and five forced fumbles in crucial moments.

Head coach Vic Fangio praised Baun’s performance, stating, “He’s had a great year. He’s set a standard for himself... (and) taken his game to the ceiling.” This kind of aggressive pursuit in player acquisition demonstrates the Eagles’ focus not only on winning now but also planning for future successes.

Furthermore, following the trade of safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson to the Houston Texans, the Eagles are actively seeking to fill that defensive gap. NFL.com's Nick Shook pointed out that Julian Blackmon, who spent the last five seasons with the Indianapolis Colts, could be an ideal fit for Philadelphia. Blackmon who recorded three interceptions in the past season had proven metrics, including a stellar 46.4 quarterback rating allowed against him in 2023.

As the Eagles embrace a future without Graham, the franchise remains committed to maintaining success and continues to cultivate talent across various positions. A healthy combination of veteran leadership and emerging stars sets the stage for the Eagles to stay competitive in the league. It is a fine line between honoring the past and building the future, and Graham’s legacy rings through every corner of the organization.

As the press conference concluded with an emotional farewell, Graham saluted the fans with his signature chant: “BG out, baby!” This emotional farewell serves as a reminder of the heart and soul he brought to the Eagles, and his influence will undoubtedly echo throughout the organization for years to come.
