NASA's ambitious plans for astronaut missions have hit a roadblock, thanks to Boeing's Starliner spacecraft facing significant delays. Originally intended for eight days, astronauts Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore have found themselves aboard the International Space Station (ISS) for over two months, with no clear end to their extended stay.
The situation became critical when Boeing's Starliner encountered serious issues with its propulsion system soon after launch. After successfully docking at the ISS, engineers detected multiple leaks and thruster malfunctions, raising questions about the spacecraft's reliability and safety.
These problems arose even before the astronauts lifted off, as Starliner's helium plumbing leaked air, leading to more leaks as the mission progressed. Each issue is critical because thrusters are necessary for performing maneuvers, especially the deorbit burn needed to safely return to Earth.

Instead of sending up another spacecraft just for these two astronauts, NASA is being pragmatic, aligning return plans with the timeline of regular missions.
Despite the growing concerns, the astronauts are doing well aboard the ISS. They are engaged with scientific experiments and day-to-day station management, trying to contribute positively to their extended mission.
They also face practical challenges, like dealing with temporary issues such as malfunctioning water recovery systems. Thankfully, food and supplies remain adequate, with recent shipments arriving to support the nine crew members currently living and working aboard the station.
Historically, the prolonged stay of astronauts isn't entirely new. For example, Soviet cosmonaut Sergei Krikalev spent ten months stranded due to changes on Earth, highlighting the risks involved with long-term space missions.
